How come when Solid Snake gets shot in MGS he doesn't die, like the guards always do?

I think it just means that he thinks the storyline is a bit flawed. Having said that, ALL storylines are a bit flawed in some ways, for example:
If nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, how did they make StarWars into a game?
