the question we should ask is, does microsoft NEED a new console? Does sony? nintendo doesn't at the moment. the gamecube has yet to come into its own. Both the PS2 and Xbox have upgrade abilities. So why waste money developing an entirly new platform? why not work hard to produce upgrades that will push your particular console to the maximum?

Well i feel Nintendo will do that. The Gamecube has all the power the developers need and want. It will be many a long year before they start demanding faster specs and larger memory capacity on dics for more detailed games. Personally there is not much nintendo can improve upon on the gamecube, its the smallest, the most powerful, the easiest to develop for and noone yet knows what expansion possibilities they have created. The old nintendo presidant would have said something like "sony and microsoft are obviously 2nd rate as they cannot be happy with the console they design, we at nintendo have created a console as close to perfection as can be achieved with modern methods, The GameCube" well mabey not but i like it.

The PS2 is the oldest and could definatly benifit from some sort of upgrade. It most definatly has the space and it would be a pity if sony never released any editional hardware to up the performance. The PS2 is definatly a very good console. It looks pretty good (only in black) and is versatile. It also has 2 USB ports and a firewire port somewhere. Now seeing as how you can get tiny portable 20gb hard drives for your computer it shouldn't be too hard to produce an equivilant for the Ps2 (correct me if im wrong). i have however yet to examine a ps2 in detail (the one we have is my bros and he keeps a strict watch over it).

The xbox is nearly the newest. I mean how can they be planning xbox 2 when the xbox hasn't even peaked. Chances are the xbox is simply a test by microsoft to see what they can do. They build the xbox, then they will (in traditional microsoft style may i add) take it apart, improve it and rebuild it. The Xbox 2 is probably going to be based on alot of the internal hardware design of the Xbox. They have proven their idea works and now they will actually try to put some effor into designing something. Personally i don't see xbox upgrades exactly round the corner. Why should they give people upgrades when they are planning their next assult on the console market? It would be a pity if they didn't the Xbox does have potential and i believe that has yet to be fully exploited.

is console the right word though? the next sony and microsoft "consoles" will not be game consoles as we know them. They will be able to control all your stuff, from VCRs and DVD-RWs to Hi-Fi's and telephones. The chances are there will be a massiev amount built into the next sony and MS machines, more gagets than you can shake a pointy stick at. I personally do not want that. I can;t remember which law it is but the simpler things are the less likely they are to go wrong. Wheras any nintendo machine will solely play games, Sony and Microsofts machines will have many many functions (see previous 'pointy stick' comment), this means they will be more prone to crashing and say if your Xbox 2 was hooked up to your lighting system and hi fi youd leave it on for the night and be woken at 3am by the lights flashing on and off and the hi fi turned to full volume because the xbox 2 felt lonely.

Personally i look foward to seeing the next gen consoles and what they can do, but i won't be rushing out to the shops to buy one..

goddamn my post makes no sense here whatsoever. Your cheapening it by puting it in a topic. *still vagually annoyed*
