When I was young there were movies like ‘Cocoon’ which had Steve Guttenburg and a bunch of old people encountering some strange and soppy aliens. Then there was ‘Batteries Not Included’ in which a bunch of old people didn’t want to leave their flats, and some little alien robots showed up and helped then out.
So what happened to this very specialised genre, ‘old folks and adversity, or aliens or robots’? I think it’s time to bring it back.
Alien 5:
The story ignores the ending to Resurrection, and, well, everything back to the start of Alien 3. Ripley is pulled out of her space-pod thing to find that she has crash-landed on an old folk’s retirement planet, where there are no weapons whatsoever. Worse still one of the aliens has in the ship with her, and is hell bent on destruction. But old folks haven’t lived for so long only to be torn to shreds by nasty aliens, so they won’t take it lying down. They’ll stubbornly stand in the way of the superior alien species, and talk them down with tales of the confusion from when they decimalised money. Eventually the aliens would learn the errors of their ways, and help the elderly folk to rebuild their homes, and the elderly people teach the aliens to find the true meaning of inter-species plutonic love.
Dawn of the Nearly Dead:
The cities are in chaos, so a group of 4 people head into the suburbs to find some kind of sanctuary. They arrive at an out of town shopping centre only to realise that it’s a Sunday, there’s a jumble sale on, and old folks have turned out en-masse. One of the 4 people just happens to be wearing a knitted sweater, upon seeing it the elderly women try to get a closer look, and the 4 younger people have to flee, only to bump into a flock of elderly gentlemen outside the fishmongers, after a nice bit of fish for their supper, comparing each others bunions whilst they wait. As the movie draws to it’s close a gang of bikers turn up and attack them for no apparent reason.
The Karate Pensioner:
Mr Myagi is now very old, and in a retirement home. But he’s not going to let this stop him from finding a young apprentice to teach the art of karate. Only the youngest man in the retirement home is almost 70, and has unsightly nose and ear hair. Nevertheless My Myagi does his stuff, and his not so young apprentice uses his new found skills to beat on the nasty wardens, who have been refusing to turn the bed-bound patients, leaving them with bed sores.
Terminator 3:
In the future the resistance is running shot of resource. The robots have sent back a third terminator to take out teenage John Connor, but all that can be sent back to aid John is a crazy old man with a twisted mouth and a nasty tic. Not to worry though, because if that Terminator throws one more rock at them, he’s keeping it. These Terminators should have more respect you know, back in the good old days you could leave time portals open without the threat of robots turning on their creators and sending Terminators back through time to take out leaders of a resistance.
