What do people think that the future of gaming will hold for us in the next 20 years?

Can it get much better than this?

virtual headsets? Chips in our heads?

What will happen?

Anyone got a prediction?

In 20 years time using screens to project images will be old technology. Images will be projected precisely where we want them to be projected, so playing Stuntman 4 or The World Only Lives and Lets Die Twice in your back garden (day or night, sunlight won't affect the graphics), will be normal.

Games collections will diminish to just a few titles, because in two decades games will be so huge that people will be satisfied with playing just one or two specific titles. Gamers will become more 'specialised', concentrating on driving games or RPGs or shooters.

By 2022, gaming Clans will be more organised than they are now. Currently most clans converse over the internet via messaging and forums, NetMeeting will improve to allow gamers to converse realtime 'face-to-face' over the internet whilst actually playing their games, bringing a whole new diversity of tactics and better speed of responses to team games like Unreal Tournament: 2020 or CounterStrike.

Acclaim will be in the news again for promoting their new game "Urban Terrorist". Their idea to pay the legal costs of anyone caught detonating a nuclear device within 200 yards of the Eiffel Tower in Paris meets with disdain from the Daily Mail.

As for Hardware, Atari will have made a comeback. 20 years previously having reestablished their name by linking it with top of the range titles, in 2010 they'll unveil their plans for world domination of the console market by unveiling the Atari Tiger, but then face a hostile takeover bid from Microsoft. By teaming up with Sega, Atari rebrand the console (now the Atega Tiger) and 10 years later they're right up there with the big boys (Sony and XBox, Nintendo went back to making playing cards in 2012).

All games will now be online by default. With BT finally managing to upgrade all their exchanges, 8mb lines are the norm, Bluetooth wireless internet technology is also making headway, and rumours are spreading that at the next E3 Nintendo in 2021 will unveil the first ever wireless console, based 100% on Bluetooth but using cartridges again.

Gaming Addiction Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (G.A.M.E.) will have become a recognised excuse for people never having to work again due to their gaming interests, 94% of the world's population will play games full time, the other 6% live in Afghanistan.

Games will be programmed by computers. Computers have all the necessary information to understand what consumers desire, what features they want, what types of games they like. Goatboy will be dismayed to learn that this includes Elves, and result in him trashing various hotel rooms throughout the world whilst on tour with his band. MTV will get the wrong idea and think it's just rock stars being rock stars.

In 2020, an amazing fact is discovered by the Research Department at the University of Gaming, Silicon Valley, California. Monkeys have appeared or been linked with every single game released since the year 2003. This astounding result convinces the world that in fact it's not just genetics that link humans to the apes, but that there's some form of mental bonding there too. Further research is planned using Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, as a guinea pig to investigate these findings.

Lara Croft will be a FF cup.

Anything posted in this thread would be

- the senseless ramblings and wild guesses of vodka-intoxicated, bearded men with yellow teeth.
- the precise future of gaming given to us by time-travelling space gypsies.
