Story
700 years from the current day, a small robot named Wall-E is working alone to try and clean up Earth. Built for the purpose to compress all of the waste Human’s have left and make it a more tidy and habitable place. While Humans have gone into Space on what was meant to be a few year long luxury cruise to come back to a clean new World, but things didn’t go as planned and the cruise has been going for a very long time.
While Wall-E is on his usual business of clearing the rubbish and keeping some of it, a space ship lands on earth and deposits a very modern, clean looking robot. Who is seen whizzing around the Earths now barren landscape, only to be startled by a slight movement by Wall-E and then shoots at him! Within a small amount of time we learn that the new robot who Wall-E is falling in love with, is named Eva. Keen to impress her, Wall-E shows Eva a small plant he discovered on one of his trips. This immediately sends Eva into a frenzy and she takes the plant and shuts herself down, emitting a green light and waiting for her ship to return.
Being the naïve and caring robot Wall-E is, he looks after Eva, even as she remains motionless. Only for him to leave her briefly and Eva’s ship returns. Wall-E rushes back to try save her from being taken, but ends up joining Eva in Space, and finds himself on the Axium, where all the Humans have been.
The story continues to progress from here, showing the relationship between the two robots and some new ones that are befriended on the ship. All in the hope that the Plant Wall-E found is proof that life can exist on Earth. Seeing this the Captain of the Axium tries everything he can to get the Human Race home!
I won’t spoil anything by going further, but Wall-E goes on for some more adventure and makes new friends. With touching twists loveable characters all the way to the end, Wall-E is a must see for any family or fan of the Disney, Pixar work!
Characters
All the characters within the film have been so well developed, and have their individual personality that sticks with them until the end. I was so impressed with the voices of all the robots and the depth that each one has. From their trademark noise to how they act just like humans was a real asset to the story and the film overall.
The main focus is on Wall-E and out of the whole cast he is without question the most loveable and has the biggest personality. From him dancing to old musicals on Earth, to teaching other robots to wave and act more like Humans. Wall-E is one of Disney’s most complete characters!
Eva soon comes into the film and as Wall-E’s love interest has a big part to play, very cute and sweet to look at, her right arm that doubles as a laser gun shows that she is not as innocent as you would first think. While Eva is the more futuristic and at a glance intelligent robot, Wall-E is the down to Earth, well rounded robot we all love! Making a great duo that will teach each other new and exciting things that they have never seen or known before!
The Humans within the Film are all obese and lazy, not thinking for themselves but what Buy n Large (BNL) the huge corporation who built the Axium, tell them to do. For me this was a great little dig at us at the minute. Showing what kind of thing could happen if everything goes on as is. The massive pollution / rubbish problem, and the fact we are all getting larger due to fast food, not exercising etc etc. I thought this was a nice little touch from the producers and while I doubt Children understand the hidden meaning, I am sure the adults watching will!
On the whole, the characters are hugely effective in creating a memorable film that will stay with everyone a long while! While the first half of the Film has very minimal dialogue, the sounds and body language created by the robots really make this seem like nothing and you actually forget that you have not heard a human voice for some time!
Overall
So a great story with characters that are so developed they seem real, sounds like there is nothing wrong with the film, right? Well, yes and no. It all seemed a tad short and it’s not exactly the hardest film to guess what will happen. Maybe that is just me being too critical, or that it really is a kid’s film that adults will enjoy for the captivating characters and story.
The latter seems the most logical and if you watch the film then you will realise it is also the most true. While not all adults will like the Disney magic within the film, anyone who has been a fan of a previous animated Film from them will find Wall-E one of their greatest, plus if you have kids then I am sure they will enjoy this more than any of us.
I think it is safe to say that Wall-E has stolen the hearts of many and will be a big hit for a long time, as well as being a huge character for Disney in their future adventures and projects! I really enjoyed every moment of the film and the comedy within it was brilliant, the cinema was very rarely silent, be it the laughter of children, adults and I even heard a couple of children crying towards the end! A must see in my opinion and a very enjoyable film!
