I am going to write for and against this point but I am trying to think deep and hard and to present valid points that support both sides of the arguments, which a lot of people around here find hard to do.
Cast back your minds to your first console. Mine was the Sega Master System; wow I can remember it well. I was only a little nipper but I can remember it well. I used to love playing Sonic and the built in game Alex the Kid. And back then I had no idea that the money was even going anywhere. My Dad bought me the thing and I loved it.
We have come along way since then. Due to the fact it is hard for me to remember that I shall write about what I do know about. Which is modern day gaming.
I own a Gamecube and I am a Ninty. I am proud of it, but I am not the type of Ninty to slang and just forget that other consoles actually exist and I know they have their perks and their low points. But I will stick to the point.
Gaming is getting expensive and at the moment all I can see is the biggest wallet wins. I mean lets look at the current news stories. Rare have been sold off to Microsoft for an unspeakably large amount of money. Now to me Microsoft have made a good move but why does this headline have to shroud the true meaning of gaming. Gaming is amusement its entertainment. But it is being shrouded by these moneybags.
I mean back on my master system I had a built in game. It was brilliant, although it had no saving capabilities I still played it the most. I didn't have to go out and get another game because I was content with the one I had. Which brings me on to the modern aspect of gaming. When I bought my Game Boy Advance, because I was a skinflint, I had no games for 3 weeks. And if it hard a classic game built into it I would be a very happy man. I would have enjoyed it twice as much. But I know it is only a small hand held piece of equipment. All the non-portable games consoles have the capabilities for the in built game aspect. I wouldn't mind if they were Retro games. No I definitely wouldn't. I would love to play those classics again. But I cannot.
Wouldn't it increase sales dramatically if these consoles did have their older more dated games actually built in to them? If you think about it Sony are almost there because they can use Playstation games on their Playstation 2 and Nintendo are remaking some of their classics for the Game Boy Advance and Microsoft, well they are new, they have to retro games...yet.
But then again you still have to buy these remakes or you still have to earn the Playstation title to play it on the Playstation 2so it comes down to money again.
We can look at the Resident Evil remake for example. A great game, which I love very much, but I have heard a lot of complaints about its price. £49.99 Recommended Retail Price for a remake IS a bit steep. I mean it has the same story line, even though it has "photo quality graphics" and is almost "50% bigger" it doesn't make it original.
Also the gaming scene is in the news because the constants dropping in prices of the consoles. £300 for a Playstation 2 and a X-Box on their release and only £130 for a Gamecube left me wondering why they would charge so much. I will make it fair and say the Playstation 2 was down to £200 at that point in time, but it is still a lot of money. I had to save for 13 weeks to afford my Gamecube and then I still needed money for Games. Whish again brings me back to the built in games factor.
However, to be fair, the developers need their money so that they can build and maintain their high quality games.
I hear a lot of people complaining about not being able to afford games due to the fact that their release dates are too close and that they cannot get everything they want this side of Christmas. So once again the money is over powering the entertainment of the games.
But hey I do not decide that everything must be expensive. I did not say that by buying four games you have paid out the money you did in the first place to even get the console. But hey everyone needs money for food and for water so that they can live.
I conclude this post by this final statement:
If we had no money then we wouldn't be able to play our games, and the money that we spend goes to a good place so these people called developers can give us another Perfect dark or another Metal Gear Solid next year. But if you have no money for you games because they are too expensive, then how will you be entertained? Or amused? You won't will you
So think about this the next time you go to buy a game, is it worth it.
Will you enjoy this game? Does it have a meaning to you? Or is your money washing away into some black void in a bank. Humans do not rule this world, this planet. MOENY DOES.
But look around you. The console prices have been slashed months after launch, to get us to buy. You can buy second hand, or wait for a Greatest Hits range if you're really THAT tight fisted. personally, I don't mind paying £35 for a game if I know I'm going to get my money's worth...and I almost always do.
