I've recently set up a simple placeholder site for a colleague on freeola. It's uploaded and works fine from its freeola address. The problem is that when I point a non-freeola domain to the .myfreeola.com address, I get a freeola.com 404.

The page works perfectly when you type www.sitename.myfreeola.com, but from the domain it's always a 404.

I've double- and triple-checked the records at the domain host's end, and everything appears to be fine.

Unfortunately, as I have no control over the domain (financially), it is not an option to move it to get dotted. Anyone know what the problem could be?

Excellent, thanks Eccles!

I knew it had to be something do to with the freeola side, and that makes it perfectly clear. I'll probably use a frame redirect for now and I'll get on his back to move the domain to gedotted (I have hosted sites and domains there for years and it's been pretty much trouble-free).

Thank you Eccles and Hmmm... for your swift responses!

Take care.

Hello,

If I understand you correctly you have a domain that is external to Freeola (not managed by GetDotted) and you have a CNAME record for that domain pointing to Freeola.

This setup will not work as in order for a domain to point to Freeola web space it must be managed by GetDotted/Freeola.

You are getting a 404 error from our server when you try to use the domain simply because there is not record of the domain pointing to any Freeola web space (no records on our DNS) and until the domain is transferred to us it will not work.

This means you will have to use another method or redirection, such as .htaccess, frames or header rewrite.

Hope that helps!

Well, it's a C record redirection, and normally, as you say, one would have to wait up to 24 hours for DNS propagation. However, as the domain is already pointing to freeola (hence the FREEOLA 404 I receive) I would have thought it was already active. I mean, I've never heard of successful redirection of *part* of an address (eg. the domain points to myfreeola.com, but not www.sitename.myfreeola.com).

If that makes sense...

Hi ECS, welcome to the forums...

If you can view the page/site directly then it sounds like the 'redirection' is at fault. Do you know how the redirection is carried out? Frames, 301, etc.?

Another possibility is if you have only just put the redirection in place then it often takes up to 24 hours for the DNS to pick up the changes - if this is the case then it could all be working by tomorrow :¬)

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
