The 7 Deadly Sins are: Pride, Envy, Anger, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust
Again, if we turn this concept and use it to look at video games, what do we come up with? I have already shown how not following the 10 commandments makes a great video game! (Again, please no one take offence at this, it is satire!) But could it be true that if we commit each of these sins that we have a better video game ?
Pride - Pride and vanity are competitive. If someone else's pride really bothers you, you have a lot of pride.
In terms of gaming, price has a very important factor. We want to win; we want to be the best. We rarely (if ever) feel good for someone else that beats us in a game or competition (at least I don’t! .... maybe I'm a bad person!). If a game doesn't make us want to compete to win, then what is the point of it? Absolutely none! In fact I reckon I can go out on a limb here and say that there is no video game available that doesn't have a competitive factor to it (otherwise it wouldn't be a 'game' would it?).
Envy - Envy resents the good others receive or even might receive. Envy is almost indistinguishable from pride at times.
Who doesn't feel envy if they see someone with the latest console or game? If we didn't envy others with particular games or consoles then we wouldn't be bothered buying them!
Also, we envy others who win at gaming. We want to be the winners always.
Anger - Anger is often our first reaction to the problems of others. Impatience with the faults of others is related to this.
If a game can provoke an emotional response in us that means that we have become involved with it on a certain deep level. We can get angry at games when we loose, crash or die. We can get angry at games when the story wants us to. A game that doesn't stir up emotions is not going to become very addictive for us.
Sloth - General laziness, slowness.
Well it’s obvious isn't it! We sit for hours in a big comfy chair, just twiddling our thumbs in order to play games. We are not exactly taxing ourselves. Thus we can become slow and sluggish. If a game doesn’t have the “one more go” factor that keeps us at if for hours then it is not doing its job.
Greed - Greed wants to get its "fair share" or a bit more.
If someone has a bigger gun than us, we want it. If someone has the better car, we want it. The concept of always wanting something better is what drives to complete more and more of our favourite games.
Gluttony - Wanting too much of anything (not just food)
Who hasn’t tried to collect every last coin, jiggie, fruit etc.? Who hasn’t wanted to kill every last baddie? We have a basic greedy urge to gather as many collectible items as we can possibly get our grubby little hands on. Without having stuff to collect/kill what is the point?!
Lust - Lust is the self-destructive drive for pleasure out of proportion to its worth.
Lara Croft.... enough said!
You know, on writing this I am coming to the realisation that the 7 deadly sins and the 10 commandments are not so different!
Anyway, it seems that once again we have a set of rules for defining what makes a good game!
So come on... what would your 7 Deadly Sins of gaming be? What are the 7 worst things that you could do to be classed as a bad gamer?
-Clumsiness
-Fear
-Saving before jumping/attacking
-Not taking chances
-Using the brakes
-Button bashing
-Resetting
And for that matter, what are the 7 Deadly Sins of posting in this forum?
Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, and spam!
Oh yeah, and to all you games developers out there... trial and error bits in games; get rid of 'em. There's nothing more annoying than having to put up with trial and error. Argh!!!
And wasn't it me?
