"Is there any point in behaving morally, unless you belive in God?"
"Weee neeed yoouur heeelp"
classic.
As for the topic question.
I imagine religion has been around almost as long as humans have been sentient creatures. Though the religious nuts will counter me here, I've always believed that religion was created to force order through the instillation of fear. Which is basically what the bible is all about "do good stuff or burn in hell" etc.
The point to this being that moral living is a good thing overall, but most people won't act that way unless they have to. Religion gives people a reason to do so, if only through the threat of bad things happening in the afterlife.
I would say that it's definitely worth acting moral, a good deed deserves another etc. Religion acts only as a way of insuring more people act that way, rather than being the only moral highground.
