Now I've never been one to complain about adverts on TV. In fact, I laughed at the people who called for the Xbox "Cradle to Grave" advert to be banned.
But I saw one last night for the Daily Mirror which I did think was in pretty bad taste.
I features a topless model posing for pictures; you can't see the photographer, but you can hear the camera and see the flash. And you don't see the girl's boobs, just a side-on view like so many shower gel adverts.
No, I'm not going to complain about a half-naked girl!
As the girl poses, the voice-over says something like, "Some tabloids just want you to get them off..."
Then the top half of the picture 'tears away' like paper halfway up the side of the girl's left breast, revealing an X-ray like image of the top part of the breast, with what appears to be a tumor.
And the voice-over continues, "...we just hope that you never have to." And the Daily Mirror logo appears.
I sat there for a few seconds digesting the advert, partly shocked, wondering if there had been some other message that the advert was putting across.
But there wasn't. No mention of help organisations for those with breast cancer, nothing about any articles they were running. They were simply using breast cancer to sell try and sell their paper.
I actually said to myself out loud, "That is disgraceful." And considering that breast cancer kills 250 women a week (I just looked it up - http://hosted.aware.easynet.co.uk/), it really is.
As I said earlier, I'm not one to write and complain about adverts on TV, but this does have me wondering whether I should start.
Have you seen the advert? What do you think of it?
Mouthbreather looking at The Sun and pointing at Page 3 going "Ook!Ook!"
Same Mouthbreather with The Times, looking confused and turning it every which way
Same Mouthbreather with The Mirror, little half-moon specs on with tongue poking out corner of mouth smiling
Voice-Over "When comics don't cut it and Broadsheets make you nervous. The Mirror - voice of those who sort of want to understand the world but still read about soap stars getting drunk"
What the ad was trying to say, I think, was that the Mirror has moved from showing breasts to covering things like Breast cancer. However, I have not seen the advert, and from what you've said it sounds as if I might be wrong. In which case, yes, it is absolutely shocking behaviour.

If this is true then it is particularly shocking. I don't understand how that is supposed to sell Papers. Its not as if its saying the daily mail is good. Basically their sales opitch is 'We hope you don't have to have your brests removed due to breast cancer'. !!!!!
