Storyline is one of the basic things we look for when playing games, its the thing that strings it all together, and keeps us interested. Games are sold for their storyline before they are sold for their graphical makeup or gameplay, look at most boxed PC games and doubtless you'll see an opening as it would be to a story of the same description, i.e. 'you begin in the ashes of the old world, Rome has fallen....and so on and so forth.
A lot of detail is put into this area of a game, just look at all of the text in games such as final fantasy and Zelda. hours and hours of the stuff.
Just to say really, that if school bound literate hopefuls like us, the gaming generation, were to look for a job in the gaming market, there would almost certainly be huge opportunities in the field of storyline writing and anything related to that aspect of gaming development. Its a comforting thought, and doubtless by simply being here, we all must like writing about games.
So why not think about a career doing it?
Anyone written to any magazines along these lines? I sent in a kickin' review once to Edge, well, for the hell of it really, and they sent me back an insult, my review with 'keep trying, well done,' nice enough, although i'd expect more effort in the put down which basically meant, 'even if you were the queen we wouldnt hire you.'
not that I expected to be hired, lets be real, but at least some gentle praise? anyhow, just to let all ye who be worried about poor me and my experience with the big bad Edge, I am not detered, and will persist.
(No offence to you- the person under the alias- 'Edge' of course.)
1. Todays society is becoming dumber and dumber. Stuart Philips for example. When people play games now days, they want slap-stick violence the majority of the time.
We are a dying breed, where we want to comprehend vast and complicated story lines, that give us so much more happiness when we reach our goals of that particular game. ..... Sorry, I have dinner. Speak to you soon!
Damn good plot it is too. I'm not modest. : )
