Now I have being doing business studies just under a year now and have learnt some very useful information. One of which was that competition is good for the consumer if there is two stalls both selling fruit and veg. They are both going to have to fight for customers either by offering a decent service or better prices (sr is a good example they have done both). This has been proven in the gaming industry, for example the three next gen consoles. All have had price cuts apart from the gc which started at a very low price all to attract customers. The gaming company could not just offer them a cheap console they had to offer a decent gaming service by signing deals with gaming companies to make games for there machine. This has therefore been better for the consumer as if there was one console maker they would charge what they wanted and leave it at that price because they have no competition, obviously it wouldn’t be too high as they would want to sell as many machines as possible. But overall if that happened it wouldn’t be that great for the consumer as the companies would try and produce more and better games. People in the short term would think that it would be great but in the long term I cant see it working out.
So is this what is happening in the handheld market? Well In my opinion, yes it is. The only competition is from mobile phones which at the moment offer very little and aren’t much of a threat to Nintendo, but in a couple of years time they could be. I believe that the consumer would seriously get a better deal if there were more competition in the handheld market. At the moment the gba is at a good price but would probably be at a lower price if there were some competition. Also not many decent games are coming out on the gba as Nintendo are putting a lot of hard work in to the gc causing less work on the gba. If Sony or Microsoft or even Sega produced a handheld it would cause some serious fighting in the handheld market, prices would come down there would be more games a struggle to improve graphics and its game database. So I believe that there needs to be some brave company out there to attempt to get a hold in the handheld market, after all it’s a market with millions an millions of pounds to be made. There have been a few companies give it a go but have failed due to its new image and everyone knowing Nintendo. An example is the neo geo. I don’t know how long it will take for a different company to get a foothold in the market but I hope it is sooner rather than later.

Yeh i know i answered it in the first paragraph. The point of the subject was to show why they didn't and where other companys have failed due to a certain area.
