There was just something about squashing Goombas, kicking Koopa Shells and Fire Flowers that meant those highly-pixelated didn't matter, and that I was set to become a Gamer for the rest of my life. And first a fore-most, I loved Nintendo.
Up untill this very day nearly 12 years-on I can honestly say that I am still awaiting to see something from the Big N themselves that dissapoints me highly.
Super Nintendo classics like Super Mario RPG and Earthbound may have failed tp reach the sandy shores of Cornwall and the rest of Europe, but I was far-from distraught with the quality within the likes of Super Mario World and Mario Kart.
The N64 may have beebn high-priced , but playing Mario 64 and the 2 Legend of Zelda games was just something-else!
As you can see, Nintendo have always had something on offer during my lifetime that has made me proud to have owned every-single-one of Nintendo's Home Consoles, even if it was just for a few-weeks or-so.
Quite what that is is something I cannot put my finger on.
It's there, I know it, I can sense it...
But I cannot feel nor see this quality I cannot play games without.
Great Innovattion and New Ideas have always played some-part in Nintendo's work to make their games the best I know I can buy with my money.
Wether it's simply the abillity to travel through Time with the Ocarina of Time and the Master Sword, or even if it's just Mario and his different Caps and Power-Ups... Nintendo have done them first, and more-importantly; best.
While they may have been the masters at injecting new ideas into our favourtie games, all ideas become old quickly, and true originallty soon becomes a 'thing-of-the-past'. And as hard as it may be to face, Shigeru Miyamoto will soon run-out of new ideas, and we'll start seeing a lot of the same-old ideas in Nintendo's new games.
But Nintendo have already jumped back into the Hot Seat and are still throwing new ideas and originallity into the Gaming World... But this time it's being injected into the Genres, rather than the Games themselves.
While the new Mario and Zelda games may look the same-as-ever, with the exception of a few graphical tweaks and changes, Nintendo have been hard-at-work with what was an 'all-new' Nintendo game just a few months back in Pikmin.
What looks like a simple Real Time Strategy with cute little Alien creatures running around actually has a lot more to it than what meets the eye. There is a lot of Strategy envolved as Captain Olimar searches for his missing Ship Parts, but this is much more of an Adventure game that envloved a lot of Strategy, and Adventure games are games that only people with immagination, like Nintendo, can do most.
Think of it as more of a Strategy-Adventure game, and you'll enjoy it far-more.
And to think that I nearly ignored this game as I thought it was more Strategy than anything! But when I got down to playing it, I found the Adventure inside and I love it.
The same is being done to Metroid Prime, but that envolved turning a First Person Shooter into more of a First Person Adventure with a lot of exploration envolved inside. Many people have been put-off from this game as they look at it and see it as far-from anything like the SNES classic Super Metroid. But after a closer-inspection you'll soon see why First Person works-out better than a Third Person game would with Samus Aran and her array of weaponry and gun-power.
So while other big-names like Capcom and even Rare are trying to inject all they can into the Games themselves, Nintendo have beaten the rest to become the first to find a new space for new ideas - in the Genres themselves.
They've done it to one strategy game and a sequel to Pikmin is apparently on the way. Then there's Metroid, the FPS-esque games, both of which are full-of Adventure - just like Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Whatever next?? Will we see Nintendo take Racing that one-step further and introduce Adventure into the forth-coming Mario Kart game?
Whatever happens, we know that Nintendo are still doing what they do best, even at a time when Originallity appears to be dead.
Since then we've had a SNES, N64, Dreamcast and Gamecube ^_^
So that was my encounter with a console , i loved it , and erased the tank game on it (pulled it out without turning the console off ... oops) and ive looked after it , played it and loved it, and loved it some more. My dad also had a gameboy , and the only game he ever bought was tetris, which i love aswell.
good post sol.
Imagination is something that's dying out these days, what with the increasing popularity of television. Hopefully, when I'm a little older, I'll pursue a games designing career and put my imagination to full use.
Only when imagination dies, will originality.
