Now here’s a reversal of fortunes if ever there was one. We might be used to great Japanese games not making it to the US or UK, but here’s one great Japanese game that isn’t coming to....Japan.

Konami has decided that Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance for the Xbox won’t see a Japanese release because not enough Xbox units have been sold in Japan to date.

This has probably been influenced somewhat by the fact that Metal Gear isn’t nearly as popular in Japan as it is in the west, but it’s something of a blow for Microsoft who had fought hard to get MGS2:Substance on the Xbox in addition to the expected PS2 and PC versions.

Konami say that until Xbox sales improve, the game won’t see an Xbox release inside Japan.

Even though the rest of the world may still get MGS2 on XBox, the fact that it has been pulled from the Japanese market sends the wrongs signals. People will see this as a failure, and some may think it's a sign of whats to come - more games axed from XBox. It knocks the product confidence.
The big M had better buy up the entire market before it's too late.

It can only damage Xbox further in Japan, having won the license Microsoft have now handed a console exclusive to Sony, and what's even better is Sony of Japan didn't have to pay a penny for this exclusivity ! When you see how popular MGS2 was in Japan, and how PS2 sales went up with the release.... it's going to hurt Microsoft.

Microsoft should really be looking at whats gone wrong in Japan - Sony and Nintendo have both done well there and always have, Sega did too. It may only be a minor market to Microsoft, but it's a big one for MS's competitors. If it's true I think its thje first sign that Gate's "thorw money at the problem" tactic in the console industry. Sure, he's got Rare, but if he's lost Konami....who make infinitely more games than Rare do....

Well from my point of view, Konami are making more of a business decision for themselves than letting the few X-box owners in the east decide for them.

Maybe the game will see a release if the console actually starts selling a bit more in Japan. Otherwise, it's a game the Japs wont be playing...

Cheeky, "you want the game? buy this console" great marketing strategy, but I suppose if the game isn't as popular over there, than many Japanese gamer won't think they’ll be missing out on much. Odd decision though.
