I've been wanting to review this film for a while after I bought the video from eBay, and seeing as you don't stock it SR (and trust me, you should!!) I'll do it on the forums. Ergo:

--------- ----------- -----------

This is the film that kicked off Kevin Smith-mania; the first ever film the director made in the View Askewniverse, a wacky world shown in five feature films (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) with an array of brilliant characters and tonnes of great quotes.

First off - Clerks is a film you'll need to concentrate with. When Smith made it, he couldn't afford colour film so this baby is all in black and white. It's also very much centred on dialogue as opposed to actions, and uses lots of big words and clever jokes so if you're a gross-out humour kind of guy, this may not be for you. Everyone else - go buy this film!

The basic plot (as in the plot that is very basic) sees 22-year old Dante Hicks asked to cover for someone at his workplace, a Quick Stop convenience store in New Jersey. The film is based around the day of Dante and his friend Randall, who supposedly works in the video store next door (although he seems to spend much more time in the QS). Lots of things happen today, most of them ending with Dante looking miserable and shouting "I wasn't even supposed to BE here today!": he meets his high-school sweet heart (who cheated on him "8 and a half" times)...he closes the store to play a hockey game, and again to go to a wake with Randall.

Of course, that's not all. Sexual revelations from his girlfriend ("36? Is that including me?!" "...37"), insane guidance counsellors, conversations about whether innocent builders were killed by the Jedi Order whilst they worked on the Death Star are all contained in this jet-black humour, as well as a select few scenes with the foul-mouthed funsters Jay and Silent Bob.

If you've seen the other films in the series, you'll catch a few references (the girl that died in the swimming pool) and recognise some names (such as Randall's cousin Walter, and Rick Derris)...but unlike Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, getting these in-jokes are a bonus rather than a neccessity.

This is probably my favourite film of all time. From sharp one liners ("Cute cat. What's its name?" "Annoying customer.") to witty diatrabes ("I don't appreciate your ruse, ma'am.") to good old fashioned gags ("breaking your back isn't a very embarassing way to die..." "he was trying to suck his own dick at the time"), every other sentence coming from the characters' mouths make me at least smile. Really, it's just a lot of conversations and a few events rolled into one big film, but it makes for a darn good one. Smith is great at turning everyday chatter into hilarious exchanges, and in Randall he has created one of the greatest comedic characters of the 90s...and while Clerks may at first seem the least polished and pretty, at the heart it's the original, and best.

The only drawback is that you might have to wait a few years to watch the film, it being an 18. The language is rather adult, and there's one instance of what could be refered to as either 'nudity' or 'strange and unusual pornography' being shown on screen, but if you're old enough to know better you will concentrate less on the "dude, he just said the f-word!!" parts and more on the important stuff. Two thumbs way, way up for this.

Apart from Stryke and C Douch, any other Smith fans? What's your favourite Askewniverse film?

1) Dogma - I've watched it so many times and still find it hilarious
2) JASBSB - They made it one 90 minute long gay joke...Excellent.
3) Mallrats - Best Jason Lee flick.
4) Clerks - Amused me. Lots.
5) Chasing Amy - I don't have a great opinion of this as a comedy, but I bought it for a tenner from HMV yesterday because it still rocks. Hey, it's KS.

Hope Jersey Girl is good.

My favs

Mallrats - One of the few films I've laughed at watching alone.
Dogma - Extremely witty and informed on Catholic faith
J&SBSB - Because it's one long in-joke with Luke Skywalker.
Clerks - It's stylistically simple but contains the genesis of Smith
Chasing Amy - Tried to be an "issues" movie and, for the most part, failed.

---

Just my opinion, so dont start bleating that I'm wrong because I'm not when it comes to what I like for me.

Clerks sure is a classic film. In some ways it's pure Kevin Smith and unlike anything else he did subsequently.

The best ? Chasing Amy, for it's plot, razor wit, jokes and great cast.

The worst ? Mallrats. Still good, but not as good as the rest.

Here's how I'd rate Smith's stuff so far (1 is best);

1 Chasing Amy
2 Dogma
3 Clerks
4 Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back
5 Mallrats
6 Clerks Animated Series (sucked)

Don't know about Jersey Girl yet, looks good, maybe a bit too serious.
