To set the record straight!

At the end of last night's "The Premiership" programme, they showed the back cover of today's News of the World, featuring a story under the banner headline "BERGY 'QUIT' SENSATION".

As an Arsenal fan, and a fan of Dennis in particular, I was worried - even though I'd trust the News of the World about as much as I'd trust Michael Jackson in a paediatrics ward.

But I bought the paper anyway, to see what they had to say.

The story is a News of the World 'exclusive', and reads:

-----

DENNIS BERGKAMP last night sensationally admitted he's preparing to quit Arsenal at the end of the season.

The Dutch master wants to retire at the end of his contract — which expires in the summer — and while he's at the peak of his career. In an exclusive interview he reveals how:

He's already sought advice from Gunners' defender Lee Dixon, who retired at the end of last season.

He wants to quit soccer when Arsenal are dominant, ruling the Premier League and Europe.
He said: "I can smell the end of my career. I know the end is coming. My family and I are very happy in England but when my contract ends I will go back to Holland. I left there 10 years ago but it will always be my home."

Bergkamp has been the inspiration behind Arsenal's sensational start to the season, masterminding their surge to the top of the Premiership and their great Champions League form.

But he warned: "I have to be realistic. I am 33 now and although I think I'm still getting better as a player, I also know I will not be faster as a player if I continue.

"And the thing I want to do is to stop at the top and with the biggest club I have played for — Arsenal. I certainly won't go from Arsenal to a smaller club. I'm a top player and I will stop playing at a top club.

"Right now I'm asking myself: ‘Am I going to miss it?'

"I have spoken to Lee Dixon since he stopped playing.

"He said he didn't miss the football but he missed everything surrounding the football.

"The humour around the dressing room, travelling to the games and the camaraderie with the players. And I think that's what I will miss too, not the football."

And as soon as he does hang up his boots he says he will go home to Holland.

He said: "I miss my family, things like going round to your parents on Sunday afternoons for a cup of coffee."

And he pays glowing tribute to his wife Henrietta. Bergkamp added: "I took her from Holland, then to Italy and now to England. She was a very young woman when we got married. The day after I took her to a strange country where we didn't speak the language but we still succeeded."

I needn't have bothered buying it, because it is all the work of the author's (Rob Beasley) over-active imagination.

Arsenal.com today posted this official statement:

-----

Arsenal Football Club issued the following statement on Sunday, September 29.

"Reports suggesting that Dennis Bergkamp will retire at the end of the season are somewhat premature.

"Dennis would like to stress that he has not actually stated that he will be retiring at the end of this season."

-----

Dennis has also issued the following personal statement through his official website:

-----

Despite what you may have read elsewhere, I have certainly not decided that I will quit Arsenal at the end of this season. I've not made any decision at all about my future, it is far too early to think about that. I've always said that I will make my decision at the end of the season, when a number of options will be open to me, including staying at Arsenal.

To be fair, the way I and the team are playing at the moment, retirement is the last thing on my mind. When we're in this sort of great form and everything is going our way, we all of us feel like young men. So I repeat, I am only thinking of winning matches and trophies for Arsenal right now and have made no decision about my future beyond this season.

Can I also take this opportunity to congratulate the boys on their
performance at Leeds United. I can tell them, it was awesome to watch. With Freddie back fit and Robert and Gio not far behind, there is a lot too look forward to this season. I can't wait to get back from this injury and return to the action.

-----

I dare say that the reason the story was 'exclusive' to the News of the World is because no other papers were aware of the interview... because it didn't actually happen.

Arsenal are in an amazing run of form, and this would be yet another attempt at undermining the team's confidence. It's surely not just a coincidence that this story appears after Bergy has been in an amazing run of form.

They have also run similar stories about other key players over the last season or two, when those players have been in good form - most notably Patrick Vieira.

It would seem that no interview has actually taken place, and that the who article has been dreamed up in order to (a) make a sensational headline, and (b) fill up some empty space in the paper.

I also should have known better than to even consider that it may be true in any way, shape or form. The News of the World would be the *last* place Bergkamp would go to announce such a move. But I had to read it, just in case.

The way Arsenal are playing at the moment, I think they don't need him. I dread to think what they will be like when he starts playing again.

The stupid pillocks :D

Even though im not a Arsenal fan, I have to admit that Arsenal and Bergy have been truly outstanding. They make everything look so simple and the the tempo of their game is so fast. They are a great team to watch.

Henry and Kanu have been on fire as of late.
