The Arcade
The main start of it all, after the idea of it all and the creation of the first basic games came the idea of arcade machines, we have all seen them, most have played them but without them there probably wouldn't have been much of an industry. The arcade led to the creation of home consoles like the Atari and from there we got all the consoles we have all heard about.
Atari
The first, set the initial standards and also showed the world games could be brought to the home, which lead to developers starting to make games for home consoles. This also lead to the likes of Nintendo entering the market and growing stronger and stronger.
Release of the NES
You all should know what the NES is so I’ll not bore you with the details like when it was released and what kind of specification it had. It is the grandad of gaming. One of the earliest and most popular consoles of it’s times, brought a lot of people into gaming and started the rise of the industry. At it’s time it was of a very high standard and also brought a lot of good games to the industry. The NES set the path for Nintendo and from the NES they went on to make more great consoles, something they still continue to do. This is one of the biggest steps as without Nintendo there may not have been and playstation either and without providing competition to the others they definitely wouldn’t have progressed at such a fast rate.
Release of the Playstation
When the playstation was released it shocked a lot of people, firstly because it wasn’t made by Nintendo and Sega and secondly it was a good console backed up with a good choice of games. The playstation opened up a new market, a console that appealed to a much greater audience. It was aimed at mature gamers with the games that would appeal to them. In my view it changed the industy for the better as it opened up the way forward and made the other developers realise that this was the only way forward and that not only Nintendo and sega could be great at it. It was a 32-bit machine that was capable of competing with the 64-bit N64 and most say successfully beating it. Also it set the way forward by using the CD instead of cartridges and had a huge variety of games available for it.
The others
Sure there have been a lot of other consoles that have been good and have done their own bit for the industry. But I feel that the ones mentioned above contributed the most and changed the gaming industry for the better. The Megadrive and SNES was the first real battle between developers which Nintendo won. Both were great consoles and had great games for them. Also others like the Dreamcast, N64, Atari, Saturn etc all did their bit for the industry. The new 'next gen' consoles are the next step to making gaming even more enjoyable, popular and letting the industry go on and on for a lot more people.
Next Generation consoles
The PS2, Gamcube and X-Box are all competing for the same market, gone are the days of Nintendos kiddie image. The X-Box from Microsoft is said to be the most powerful console ever but can it live up to the specifications? One thing for sure is they should all do well and make the industry grow even bigger. Who knows what will follow these, I guess only time will tell. One thing we can tell though is that with competition so high and gamers expectations so high the future consoles will need to be seriously great machines.
Ok that’s the consoles out the way now what? Games I guess. They have been thousands, maybe millions of games since the industry began. A few have been classics, a lot have been really good but sadly there have also been a few which can only be described as pants, not thongs, g-strings, boxers or bloomers but big Y-front style pants. So the games that made changes to the industry are:
Space Invaders
One of the first games to be a huge success, still is with a lot of people. Started off as an arcade machine but when consoles took off it became a console game that could be played in the comfort of your own home. Space invaders is still on the go today and many still enjoy playing it. It was probably the first decent game that was enjoyed by a mass market.
Mario
One of the biggest names in the gaming industry, Mario and his brother Luigi have appeared in a vast number of games and each one seems to be of a high standard to match the time when they were released. One of the first big sellers for Nintendo Mario world and the numerous sequels have been great games and it would be hard to think of the industry without them.
Metal Gear Solid
This to a large number of people is one of the best recent games that has ever been produced. It had excellent graphics, gameplay and a good story to it. It is a classic game and one that will be remembered for all the right reasons. It showed that games could be like films and that there was a huge potential to what stories and graphics on a game could be like.
Gran Turismo
A driving game like no other. The ultimate driving simulation. This game tested the PSX’s abilities to the maximum. When it was first released the graphics shocked people as they seemed so realistic. The game seemed so real it was unbelievable. Its second sequel GT3 is the latest of the games and it has went to the next step but it was the first version which shocked us all and deserves a mention here.
There have been a lot lot more but to go on and on about them all would take forever and probably be far to boring to read so I shall stop here. Others like GTA3 which are great to play and stretch what is acceptable in games to the limits, have set the way forward for the next generation of games. There are a lot of other games available on various other platforms that probably deserve a mention here but I don’t really know much about the other consoles so maybe someone else could include them??
I used to play games a lot when I was young, I owned various consoles and then bought a SNES when they first came out. I kept my SNES for a long time but stopped playing games as much. Then my dads friend told me about the playstation and my dad talked me into selling my SNES and putting the money towards getting a Playstation. Once again I was interested in gaming in a big way but after a few years I began to once again feel that gaming wasn’t what it used to be. Then I decided that a PS2 would change that, and it did. I have once again found a good console with good games that can bring back the memories of what it should be, enjoyable and fun.
So what next? Well there isn’t a lot more to the industry other than games and consoles. Maybe the best developers deserve a mention? Or the storage used for games? The change from cartridges to CD’s and now onto DVD’s. Maybe the violence in games debates that have cropped up time and time again and caused numerous games to be banned or “ toned down a bit” so they are “suitable” * for gamers.
* By suitable I mean what someone who probably never plays games and also thinks that everyone who isn’t of a certain age is stupid and will actually believe games are real.
As mentioned before I think one of the big steps came with the move from arcade games to home consoles. A big step and a good change. These days consoles are complex and well designed machines that are capable of producing graphics that are as good as arcade machines. The arcade may now be dying out but console gaming is growing more and more, as long a good consoles and games are produced the market should continue to grow even bigger.
I think that Nintendo and Sony also deserve a mention, I dread to think what the industry would be like without them in the future or what it would be like if one had called it quits before the next generation consoles were produced. Both have contributed in a big big way to the industry, initially working together before heading their seperate ways. Sega also do there bit but they have pulled out the hardware market to concentrate on games. Hopefully Microsoft can also achieve something by adding to what I would call one of the most rewarding industries there is. So far they have just done what others in the industry are doing but I would like to see them make a bit more of an effort to offer gamers something new and special. I just hope it continues this way and that there are more and more great things that happen to make gaming an even better experience than it is already.
One thing that came to me as I thought about all this was what if one of the events didn’t happen? Imagine Nintendo didn’t exist or Sony never made a Playstation? Would the industry be as popular and how different would it be? Would there be an industry at all?
I know some will say that it is irrelevant as what has happened has happened and can’t be changed without the use of God-like powers but for the purpose of discussion and entertainment of some form what would it be like without some of these important events? Discuss.
