As you all know games are not real, never have and never will be. As technology improves we may well reach the standard of realistic graphics at the standard where it is difficult to determine what is real and what is a game. But why should that matter? If you know it is a game then surely it is alright whatever you do, surely anything should be in a game as long as the certificate rating of the game is chosen correctly.
Take films, anything can really be done in an 18 certificate movie with the exception of some. This mean if you are 18 you can watch it and most of us have probably seen some awful things in films. So why do games get slated so much?
Games haven't yet reached the photo-realistic graphics so it is easy for an adult to tell the difference. As an adult we all know right from wrong, well most do anyway.
I think a big problem lies with those who still give gaming the kiddie image and therefore it should be suitable for anyone, then when they realise it isn't instead of realising they were wrong for buying or allowing for it to be bought they blame the developer and publishers for making and allowing such a game to be made.
There are certain things I see as being wrong, killing children, abusing children, really anything horrible that is done to children in my opinion shouldn't be in a game, there was an issue before about killing a pregnant lady in a game and I disagree with this too. But not for the reasons that it is plainly wrong but because games are supposed to be fun and a form of entertainment and I don't see how killing a pregnant lady or abusing a child can make a game fun and in my view anyone who does is a little sick.
I think developers should be allowed to include whatever they like in a game as long as it is given the appropriate rating, but developers should only include things if they create fun in the game or are required to make the atmosphere of the game complete.
In real life would you shoot back if someone was shooting at you? Probably, it is ok in games to shoot armed guards who shoot at you but what if it was a child shooting at you? Now this is where it all comes down to the person. Some would be outraged by a developer including such a thing, others would just treat it as a game and think nothing off it.
I get a bit annoyed when you see the likes of national papers and people going on about how games make people violent and dangerous and how some games should be banned. Ok they are entitled to their opinion and I am entitled to mine, such people are fools. If this was the case then films, newspapers, conversations, music and television would all have the same effect. Adults can tell the difference and children shouldn't be playing such games so it is up to the parents - as parents to ensure that their children aren't doing things they shouldn't be. I know for fact that very few people pay attention to the ratings games get and let their kids play almost any game they want. There is a big problem here but the problem lies with the parents and them alone. You let your child play an unsuitable game then you must face the consequences of what it may do to them or cause them to do.
I know this is a slight aside from the post but I think that more should be done to warn people if a game contains such scenes that maybe are unsuitable and only for a certain age group. That way parents won't complain and the industry will stop getting negative press and attention and maybe some developers won't be so picky when it comes to including certain things, who knows some developers may be holding out on certain games as the press would slate them for releasing them, we could be missing out on some good games due to the negative press.
Take the game which made you control rioting football fans. Yeah it is a wrong thing to do and those who do it should be punished, it should be at least a 15 and it is “only a game”. It isn’t going to turn us all into rioting thugs. You never know it could reduce the number or football hooligans, but I doubt it.
Luckily there wan no football trouble at the world cup or I'm sure this game would have been put to blame somewhere by someone.
Morals make us who we are, would you play a game that goes against your morals and beliefs? I'm not sure how many would, would you play a game that made you attack and kill children because of the colour of their skin or burn babies because they were "not normal", attack a disabled person. I wouldn't because not only does it sound a sick thing to do but also not the fun I want from games.
From the developers point of view I can see the troubles they face, get it wrong and face poor sales and bad press. But take a risk like GTA3 and not only make a fantastic game but make people want more of the same. They also have to make the game appeal to all so they don't include anything which may go against people's morals which is why no games up to know have had things like sexual assult, child abuse and racial attacks.
As with a lot of things the recent terrorist attacks have changed things slightly, things we may once have found suitable now are no longer considered suitable. Before the attacks many of us probably wouldn't have thought twice about flying a plane into a building but after seeing it for real and being so shocked by it all many of us probably wouldn't consider it let alone think of including it in a game or enjoying it in a game. Sometimes we don't see things as being that bad until you see it for real and then you think about them differently.
I didn't mean for parts of this to go on about the old debate of do games encourage violence because we all know that is not true, the negative points are always highlighted and I believe it is about time we pick out and point out the good sides. People can't admit blame as it is much easier (and more profit making) to blame a large company like Nintendo or Sony or to blame a famous music artist. Why can't people stand up and admit they were in the wrong. Games don't make people violent, aggressive or crazy. These people would do the things they have done even if they never played games. It is these people who make some of these issues so important in the gaming industry today.
So the way I see it is developers should be allowed to include anything in games as long as they don't over step the mark which takes the fun out of games and just makes them sick copies of the horrible things in life. Games are games and don't make us different people or evil or violent. Their contents don't make us different people, facing moral decisions in games could well prepare us for real life situations and also tell us really what kind of people we are.
One thing I think we could well see is as technology get better is games that give us a choice and then follow on from the choices we make. So we could choose to attack a certain person or run from them and depending on what you chose the game then gives you different challenges and if you like a different "path" to follow.
No matter what happens things will appear in games that not everyone will like or feel fine in doing but at the end of the day it is only a game, you don't like it then don't play it and leave the rest of us to make up our own minds and views on it.
After all gaming is about having fun, and we all find different things fun to do.
