Gaming has changed over the many years it has existed. From the most rudimentary games such as Pong to the most advanced technological masterpieces such as Star Fox. We the consumer have an important part to play in structuring the future of gaming but it is the company's like Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft that have the real power in the matter. They do market research and spend thousands of pounds to get us the best games they can supply or is that just what we are supposed to think? There has been so many sequels, prequels etc that you have to think are we just some pawn in the game of profit for people sitting in offices like Bill Gates?

We can go back in time to the years when there was no choice in what games you got at home you only got what could be produced with the technology available. The first console ever created was the Magnavox Odyssey this was a very crude little machine with very few games and a lot of limitations but people still bought it because it was the best at the time that they could have. There was no choice like what we have today. You couldn't do much of anything at all on it; the best games available were volley ball games and shoot-em-ups, which came with a light gun to use.

After this console came Pong which is a big surprise for some people but it's true. This game was the first coin operated arcade game and the first home console that everyone could afford in 1975-1977. This is why most people remember that console not because it had great graphics or technology but because it was the first home console the average man could afford.

Now we come to the NES this is the oldest console most of my generation know about. It was a dominanant console for all to enjoy but by this point in time (1985-1995) the games industry was getting more advanced and less and less restrictions were implied. You could see games like Final Fantasy and Super Mario Bros which brings me back to my original point about sequels and bringing out games that aren't entirely original if original at all!

The first Mario was created in 1982 in the game Donkey Kong Jr then in 1985 on the NES was Super Mario Bro's, 1991 had Super Mario World on the SNES, 1996 had Super Mario 64 on the N64 and finally we come to 2001 with Mario in Super Smash Bro's Melee on the game cube. These are the main games Mario has appeared in and the games were Mario's image has been changed always striving for better graphics but they always failed to go for originality. There have always been the same characters and the story lines may have been different but they always had some link that detracted from its originality. The only truly original game featuring Mario is Luigi's Mansion and they still managed to make Bowser the main enemy! If it weren’t for the fact that Bowser isn't actually there then it would be a whole new concept with a typical ending.

Now in the future we all look at Nintendo etc to create new games and new concepts and although there are many totally original ideas and concepts we have to take a look at ourselves and ask "Do I need this game?" and "What is so good about it?” Games are not meant to be remade and re designed they are meant to be individual works of art that stand out from the crowd when we remember them. Who will remember Super Mario 64 in 2 years time when some one asks them about it? There has been so many different Mario games not one will stick out as a supreme piece of gaming art however everyone will remember games such as Pikmin and Doshin The Giant which are truly original and will always have a place in the gaming hall of fame.

In conclusion I think we can all agree that games enrich our lives and will continue to be developed for years and years but as the boundaries of gaming technology slowly come down we can only hope that they use them to create individual games with original story lines and characters instead of repetitive story's and enemy's with the same characters no matter how memorable and successful they have been.
