HELP!!!! I'm looking at buying my first PC for home, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips, places on the net to shop where I can pick up a bargin or a decent system for under a grand. Its for home use so I guess it'll be used for my girlfriends work, my games and using the internet. I've seen some sites which let you build your own rather than splashing out on a packaged one. Any advice greatfully received.

it's got a 17" montior though, i've got a big PC table so it doesn't matter how big the monitor is, i'd only find it useful if I was sitting in a cupboard or outside on my window ledge.
Can't imagine a laptop with a normal monitor though..heh

They don't lie, the small print usually says: "offer ends on 'such and such a date' or until theres no more stock"

err i am guilty of the most stupid post hope you haven't read that yet. I was sleepy and entranced by TFT. That offer is crap. Check out SR's maxx pc.

The Maxx P4 2400

Is so much better it takes the mick. It has a good graphics card and far beter general specs but no TFT. Its the far better offer, I was an idiot before and am not sucking up to SR. Their deal is far superior for your money.

you can probably find it on the site but i'm reading it from the magazine.

check it out

AS i am incredibly nice i had alook in the paper.

If you can order today dell have:

For £899

Pentium 4 (2.5 ghz)
256 mb RAM
DVD
Cd Writer
15 inch TFT (flat screen monitor)
40gb hard disk
Modem
Speakers,
Graphics

This looks to e good spec and is woth a look i think it might be the last day of the offer, but they usually lie.

Phone them on: 0870 152 4617

or check it online: www.dell.co.uk/deals

If you follow it up and make some enquiries ask what the graphics are like, and if the computer has and "AGP slot", if it doesn't have a ver good graphics card and no AGP slot, get some advice on here as it might cause some problems. Still have a look round and see if you can beat this deal, but otherwise it looks quite good if you can't build you own.

If however you have a technologically good friend it maybe worth asking them to order you the parts online and build it for you, if you can. A bottle of wine or to can be persuasive. If you have any techno friends then its definitely worth getting them to build you one as its likely to e better and cheaper.

That is perhaps the worst piece of advice ever. The person described themselves as "a first time buyer" and asked for our advice. So is hardly likely to be able to build their own having never owned one themselves. I personally built my own but i wouldn't recommend it to a novice as a lot can go wrong.

My advice is, don't go to Pc world, don't buy packard bell as the motherboards on them are crap and incompatible. I think i saw Dell had some good offers the other day but i can't remember the specifics. It may be worth having a word with them as they occasionally have some good offers. And don't comprimise to much if your budget is £1000 but can be stretched a little bit, try (and it sounds obvious) to get the highest spec you can as the computer market is always growing and it will save you money in the long term as you won't have to upgrade so soon.

My advice would be to build your own PC, it isn't that hard to assemble and will work out a lot cheaper AND powerfull than the pre-built PC is. you know what components you used and you won't fit poor quality parts to the PC which aren't described in the product description of the store-bought PCs (eg anything apart from a pentium processor and CD drive).

Anyway, build your own!
