I have already watched Silence of the Lambs and am currently thinking of renting out Hannibal before Christmas, but with the Prequel coming out I would like to be filled in on what this story has to do with it's sequels.
Anybody reply if they know it.

Well thats why I don't usually read the books of that spawned filmes, because there are always some argument about what they've changed and cut out. I just watch the film and like it no matter what.

Apparently there was some agreement between the script-writer, Jonathan Demme, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins that if one decided not to do a sequel to Silence of the Lambs then none of them would do it. So when Demme and Foster expressed reservations about Hannibal (mainly because the book was pretty awful and written as a movie-to-be-made) the script-writer and Tony opted out too. Only Tony jumped ship after being given dollares.

So this time round with Red Dragon, the script writer's decided to break the agreement too. Though he claims that that the author, Harris, never liked Michael Mann's version of the book, and so to do it justice he has to write a new version.

Unfortunately the reason Harris would seem not to have liked Mann's version, was that Mann made the book into his own film, for the better, whereas Harris wants a direct transcript, and as you suggested, more Lecter box-office fodder. Though Harris claims it's the 80's decor and choice of actors that put him off. I want to think that Red Dragon is going to be a good film, but judging by the failure of Hannibal when it tried to be too literal an interpretation of the book, it'll probably be pretty mediocre.

What would have been better for the film story is if they focused on Hannibal starting his crime spree and eventually getting caught and put in prison/ mental hospital (dungeon).

Agreed Goaty. This whole mis-marketing deal is as bad as the Snake scenes from the E3 trailer where really you're Raiden.

Lecter is in Red Dragon (the book) for 2 or 3 sections, merely there for Graham to visit to try and get back into the mindset of a serial killer - which he needs to do in order to catch Dolarhyde.

The original movie based on Red Dragon was called Manhunter, and that had Brian Cox as Lecter. Again, his screen time probably adds up to about 10 mins if you put them all together.

This film, a remake of Manhunter and another adaptation of Red Dragon exists solely to cash in on Lecter.
The scenes in the trailer, with him attacking etc are not in the book. They're described by Graham when his son asks him why he was in hospital.

Personally I see no need for Brett Ratner's "Red Dragon". Manhunter was a superb interpretation of the book and this just reeks of lazy cash-in on Hopkins as Lecter. He's splashed all over the posters yet, if true to the book, is hardly in it at all.
And Dolarhyde, the killer, is described as blonde, 6'4 and muscular "powerful like a racehorse, sleek and dangerous". Now go take a look at Ralph Fiennes playing Dolarhyde.

I hope this movie is decent, but it's just another example of Hollywood feeding upon itself in an effort for easy cash.

Buy Manhunter instead, it's much much better.

Red Dragon was the original book, the first with Lecter in it. SOTL and Hannibal were book sequels, but were made into films first so, the first book is now billed as a prequel...

Anyways, I haven't read it, I just know that Hannibal isn't the main character. So if you wanna watch it for him then you may be dissapointed.
