With the release of Super Mario Sunshine drawing ever nearer anticipation is ever growing, and with good reason to as this will be the TRUE sequel to the highly aclaimed Super Mario 64.

Some of us have had to wait approimately 6 years for this game for me I have been waiting for it ever since I collected that last Star in Super Mario 64... and that was quite a while ago ;)

But! even though many of us will be looking forward to Nintendos latest evolution in the Mario series I can't help but stop... and think, How long can the series last? I know if and when the highly popular series does come to an end it will be a sad day for gaming etc but it is something that I think has to be taken into account.

The very first Mario game :- (excluding Donkey Kong) Super Mario Bros on the NES has been a classic since the day it was released and is still very much playable today (I even found myself playing on it last night ;) ) this game was and still is inovative in it's own right and represents a landmark in gaming history.

Over the years the series has spawned several sequels including Super Mario Bros 2 which was loved and loathed by many due to it's inovative mechanics and gameplay, I personally think that it is a great game as it shows that Shigeru Myamoto (the creator of the series) is'nt afraid to try something new and original and that originality has stayed with the series right through from super mario Bros 3 : - a superbly done sequel, Super Mario World : - arguably THE best platformer ever made, Yoshis Island : - Excellent but Highly under rated SNES game and even in Super Mario 64 : - Marios world reknown jump from 2d to amazing 3d!

And even now as we wait for the latest adventure from the portyly plumber from what we have seen (and in some cases played) so far the originality is still there, breaking away slightly from traditional Mario games with the introduction of the FLUDD system but including some of the best bits from previous mario games (ability to ride yoshi, rotating fences etc) which creates a perfect balance of new and old.

To define Super Mario Sunshineas just an "upgrade" to Super Mario 64 would be unjustified, even though it has the mechanics of the N64 smash hit and elements from Super Mario World (desribed above) it's still a fresh and innovative experience and one that undoubtably all Gamecube owners should experience ;)

Moving back to my original point though, looking over the triumphs and successes of the Mario series it does make me wonder how much longer the franchise can be kept going without spoiling it by lack or originality? i'm not saying that this is going to be the last in the mario series infact Shigsy himself has even hinted of another sequel but it does make you wonder how far a successfull franchise can be pushed especially when you have quotes from the top end of the company like "I feel like a chef cooking for a king that is full"

however long the franchise lasts i'm sure Nintendo will find ways of keeping it original but as the old saying go's "all good things must come to an end" but for now we can sleep safe in the knowledge that we will soon be treated to a shining example of how Video games should be made.

so for now "roll on October 4th!"

thanks for reading :)

What would be clever, would be if Nintendo, in twenty or so years when the franchise has just about been exhausted, said 'We feel the Mario series is coming to an end'.

Imagine then, in five years time (2027), it turns out Nintendo have been working on a Mario game to end all Mario games - for five years! The news could be released a month before the game comes out. Imagine the sales!

When the Mario series finally does come to an end it will indeed be a sad, sad day for Nintendo. I agree with what has been said, that Nintendo will know the right time to call it a day.

Maybe Mario could go back to Plumming afterwards??

But what we musn't forget are those 'other' Mario games.
The RPG's like Mario RPG and Paper Mario - I love it!
I'm sure we'll always see those - starting with 128 Marios (if that DOES turn-out to be a future release).
They may be away from what we know Mario for best, but they cannot be taken for granted either.

With or without new Adventures, he'll always be Nintendo's Mascot.
And there will be other games from Nintendo to look-forward to also.
Fire Emblen is one i'm looking-out for VERY closely indeed...

the fact is, theres only so many game genres and takes on different games, which means that its increasingly hard to come up with new, innovative and groundbreaking ideas for games,
so my question is, are we expecting too much? future games will probably just have better graphics, better sound, and the gameplay will probably be extended ie, more modes, level editors and mulitplayer options, where as the actual "game/s" will still be just spruced up fps's, platformers or rpg's at heart,

indeed, the freedom to go anywhere and do what you want has allways been a great influenece on Mario games and allways will be and at least we can enjoy quality games like this for a good while to come.

Sunshine is not as 'groundbreaking as Mario 64 was. But Nintendo actualy create games, like Mario and Zelda, that you actualy just want to play - Not do a certain thing on, such as a racing game, where you get a special boost, and get a 10 second burt of impossible speed. I mean the bit when you turn it on, run around, and you just do that. Because you want to. Its what makes a game truly great - you enjoy it, just being it, its basic moving around, not using some super SFXed up weapon or car. Just being Mario, in this case, and all other cases, is quite simply, amazing.

I doubt they'll ever stop that.

I agree. If it's not innovative, It's just not Mario

I think that Shigeru Miyamoto and the rest of the development team have enough experience and knowledge to know when to stop. To put it simply, they'll stop when they run out of ideas. It's always been Nintendo's policy to create brilliant and innovative games, with a high level of originality, and I can't see them breaking that just to cash in on a popular franchise.

It's just not Nintendo.
