I played the following games today.......
Tekken Tag Tournament
Ridge Racer 5
Timesplitters
Dynasty Warriors 2
Tekken was good but it stank of a rush job to get a Tekken game out for the release day. There was nothing particularly new and to be honest, Soul Calibur's graphics beat this hands down. It really felt like Tekken 3 with a tag option. The character "Unknown" was a nice little addition with a nice little wolf effect, but thats the only thing that got me thinking "hey, thats good !".
Timesplitters..........My god this was crud ! Maybe i've just gotten used to the PC style FPS games such as Unreal, Soldier of Fortune and Half Life, but this just didn't feel like a good game at all. The game to buy a PS2 for ?????? Yeah right ! The controls are annoying, you have to spend ages aiming your gun to hit them - even at point blank range ! And things like grenades didn't exactly have much effect considering what they are. Plus there wasn't even any blood to make up for those short comings.
Ridge Racer 5 - All i can say is you've played one RR game, you've played em all. Nothing really new in this to the other games before it, just a constant sense of Deja Vu. If you've bought a PS2, wait for the new Gran Turismo game.
Dynasty Warriors 2 - This is the only game i sat down, played and really enjoyed. It was real fun fighting on a battlefield instead of the usual 1 on 1 stuff :-)
If theres a game to buy the PS2 for at the moment, its this one. It was pretty fun mounting a horse and running into a large group of enemies, mowing them down and slashing them with my sword as i went through :-) If i had a PS2 right now, thats the game that would keep me busy till better stuff comes out.
Overall, its stabbed itself in the foot with its own hype. I went to my friends house waiting to be gobsmacked and coming away with my excitement for Shenmue somewhat tainted - far from it !
Shenmue is still hot on my mind and the only game i wanna play on that PS2 right now is Dynasty Warriors. So Dreamcast owners and those wondering if they've made the right decision in waiting for the next console - fear not.
Obviously as more games come out the PS2 will get better, but its nothing to cry about if you're one of the people having till wait till next year.
If DVD is running through your mind - Go to SR and buy a Dreamcast + DVD bundle. The DVD with that is multi region so you can play U.S DVD's as well as English ones.
