We are seeing peripherals becoming extremely advanced, and in our technology packed world they will naturally start to become smaller and more compact too like just about everything else (Xbox aside). With next generation consoles and new age peripherals battling it out on the trading market it not only means that improvements on existing products will take place but radical changes to what we think of when we hear the word ‘accessories’ or ‘peripheral’ again.
Nintendo, being such a well loved company for trying new ideas in games, which usually work, and with a very impressive display of accessories with their new console the Gamecube look like they will offer a lot over the next few years. With their new set of goods approaching us along the track like Wavebird, you can see various peripherals which appear very developed compared to what the consoles like the Dreamcast boasted just a few years ago. One of my favourites is the flashy 5-inch LCD screen that was originally seen on the Psone but has had a major upgrade, now looking bigger, better and keeping the graphics looking as crisp as ever and many third party companies are battling to make theirs the most appealing just like most other accessories.
In arcades, everybody has seen things like immobile jet skis to ride on, light guns, and snowboards to give the games on show a much more interactive feel to them. We are now starting to see things like these at home too, with light guns having been around for years and now snowboards and dance mats are hitting the shelves too. Not really knowing it until flicking through the Argos magazine lately, I saw a pair of cyber goggles type things used to wear when playing the ps2 to see all of the action through them. I was actually gob smacked, thinking that it would take years for equipment like this to come out and everyone dreamed about that kind of thing when computer gaming had just started out and even now too.
So what for the future you say? At the rate the console market is moving, in all departments, it is ruddy hard to say what is going to happen next. Personally I think it will be hard for companies to better the peripherals currently out on the market with the cordless controller- the Wavebird and virtual reality glasses. In my opinion, the peripherals will expand into new ideas and improve vastly in a short amount of time, or Companies are going to stretch enough cash out of existing ideas by adding things on to them like Pokémon did, for a few years before they have to make up fresh experiments for the public.
Well, I am just looking forward to having a go on the new games being released soon until I get Wavebird and Freeloader to make the experience of computer gaming enhanced.
Cheers (:)
