Not so much the future of gaming as the past revisited with trippy visuals: Llamasoft is back. Younger gamers might not remember classics like Lllamatron and Yak Attack, but these are games every square-eyed addict should play. Llamasoft was/is the creation of one man - the bearded hippy genius Jeff Minter. He programmed entire games alone on his Welsh farm. He is, in anybody's book, a complete nutcase.

But he is also responsible for some of the best, and weirdest, videogames in history. And now he's making more.

If you point your browser towards www.llamasoft.co.uk you'll find several of his new shareware titles. Gridrunner++ is an update of Jeff Minter's Vic 20 game: it's a brilliant shoot-em-up, that combines massively addictive twitch gaming with surprisingly deep strategy and groovy visuals. Hover Bovver: Grand Theft Flymo is, um, a lawn mowing sim. But wait! You don't use any old lawnmower, but one you've borrowed from the Queen Mother (RIP). It is, apparently, what she would have wanted. Finally, Deflex is a puzzly-shooting thing in which you get to despatch hoards of (god, I'm not selling these games well at all) floating Queen Mum heads.

All these games have big demo versions, and the full shareware titles only cost a fiver. Great value, especially for the sublime Gridrunner. Please, please play these games: you won't regret it.

If nothing else, think of it as a political statement. To quote from the website:

"This is what gaming is all about.....maybe we are heading into the dawn of a new golden age...where one man standing proud can take on the bloated corporate monsters that rule with with an iron wallet, and maybe part the gloomy grey clouds of commercialism run wild, and allow the bright sun of individuality and creativity to shine through, even if only briefly, to put a smile on our faces, and hope in our hearts.
Viva la furry resistance!"

You really can't say fairer than that.
