I am what could probably called a reformed videogame fanatic. Over recent years I've spent a LOT of time and money on videogames, caught up in the excitement and buzz on new games and consoles, desperately waiting for new games and eating, drinking, sleeping, thinking videogames.

But over the last six months or so I've changed. I've suddenly realised that although I enjoy playing video games a lot, I don't want to be caught up in the fanatical, must-have-a-game-on-release-date, obsessive and dissatisfied side of videogames that I feel the games media encourages.

Do we get too caught up in videogames? Do they actually benefit us other than providing a few hours escapism from reality now and again?

I'm beginining to think that they have become too obsessed with new technology, with commercialism and encouraging people like your good selves to buy more and more.

I will go on enjoying videogames for many years to come. But I find I actually enjoy them more now that I'm 'less obsessed', now that I've for time to read, to play and listen to music, to be with my family, to experience life a bit more.

Live a little, and the games get better.

Cheers all,

Everyone is different, some people can go without a long amount of time before they need to play a video game. Most people who call themselves gamers play at least once a day. I don't think we are obsessed as a Nation. That would be Japan.

there are alot of people who are obsessed with video games, but its just a healthy bit of fun, a form of a escapism, we shouldn't be too worried, it may be a form of intense pleasure for some people, people may be addicted, but not too many, and i think there are enough shrinks for everyone whos addicted
