What a night! According to Auto Route, I am 107.6 miles from the epicentre of the earthquake In Dudley, Birmingham, ENGLAND, yes I did say England.

Anyway getting back to the point, what a Night. 1am, As normal my little daughter prefers playing with toys than going to sleep, so My daughter my girlfriend and Me are sat in the lounge half asleep when all of a sudden the house shakes and the noise, well the noise sounded like the house was falling down.

In state of shock I rushed outside as to see what the hell was happening. After soon realising that the house wasn't going to fall down immediately and that nothing had impacted with my house, I returned inside to look for my torch.

Once In side as I fumbled around under the stairs for my torch, I was having conversation with my girlfriend cantered around what the blooming hell was it? It wasn't long before I found my torch and it didn't take long for my girlfriend to mention earthquakes.

Earthquakes, Earthquakes I replied, "we don't have earthquakes in England, well not big ones anyway", how wrong was I? To settle her worries, I told her to turn the PC on and have a look, I said if there was an earthquake, it would be reported on the web.

While I was outside with my little torch checking the house for signs of subsidence, (well checked the house for large cracks or anything that didn't look normal) my girlfriend was franticly searching the internet for news of earthquakes, not knowing where to look I said try the met office website, well where else would you look?

About 30 minutes later I returned inside having found no visible damage on the house, no large creators and really nothing unusual at all. About an hour later having finally calming down after the panic, My daughter settled and we cautiously went to bed hoping the house wouldn't collapse in the night.

This morning I had to east humble pie of whatever the expression is as what did I see when I got up but "Earthquake hits Brittan" on the TV News, I had spent last night convincing my girlfriend we don't have Large or even medium earthquakes in England.

In hindsight I wish I had turned the TV on rather than the PC, the reason I didn't is that if the TV is on, My daughter won't sleep but watch whatever's on. However, If I did put the TV surly within half an hour of the quake, one of the endless news channels on SKY would have picked the story up and I wouldn't have thought that my house was falling down, not to mention I wouldn't be trying to convince my girlfriend most of the night that We don't have earthquakes, when indeed we do!

In case you were wondering and someone may be able to help me out here, My house is made of a steel frame with large sheets of steel cladding at the top portion of my house. I assumed (now I know it was an earthquake)that even though I am over 100 miles away from the epicentre, with the steel construction of the house, the earth tremors were amplified by the steel frame and as such is why it felt like my house was falling down and appeared so loud but as I say I'm not an expert, someone good in physics may be able to explain.

Me and N (the girlfriend) live in Kidderminster which is 13 - 14 miles from Dudley. We were lay in bed watching 'Rasputin' (starring Alan Rickman and Ian McKellan) when it happened. N panicked and said "What the f*** was that?!" - I was a bit perturbed but since the ceiling hadn't caved in I wasn't too worried. I half expected the electricity to go off but it didn't.

The dog was asleep in the kitchen and I expected him to bark because we heard loads of stuff falling over off the table and in the cupboards but when N went to check on him he was just stood by the door shaking.

N rang her mum (who's elderly and lives on her own) to check she was alright and she was.

When I got up this morning I sent amusing (not!) text message to the rest of family asking if the earth had moved for them ... (groan)
