After the recent success of TV shows like 'Pop idol' and 'Popstars' in Britain, Japan is set to launch an all new show titled 'Game Idol'. While as 'Pop Idol' and 'Popstars' brought together a bunch of fame struck teens and 20-something with more makeup and hair gel than sense, 'Game Idol' is set to bring together a bunch of hopeful character designers. Each has the task of creating a video game character who will star in an all new video game series. The regional competitions to get into the televised final saw each designer simply give a breif description of their character along with some preliminary artwork, but over the course of the series, designers will be set specific tasks.

Obviously one of the first will be to create a full 3D model of the character using computer software, and then various animations, but the judges may set other tasks, like making a victory dance animation or death animation for the character, or coming up with a biography for the character.

The winner will be hired by an as yet un-named developer who will create a game based around the winning character. Judging the contest will be Hiroshi Yamauchi, former Nintendo President, who will be the judge audiences will "love to hate" due to his harsh comments and put downs and Shigeru Miyamoto, a leading figure in Nintendo's development team, who will smile a lot, play his banjo to raise group morale and be kind to contestants, but will ultimately be too scared to go against what Yamauchi says. The final judge is yet to be confirmed, but rumours suggest the bespectacled Bill Gates may have bought a large share in the Japanese TV firm in order to become a judge and get free Xbox sponsorship of the series to help boost sales in Japan.

The Stamper brothers of Rare commented, "This TV show is the beginning of the end for the games industry. It used to be about making fun games, but now these companies are just selling out. They just want to make a quick buck off a character who will get so much free advertising that the game will be a surefire hit. I bet the game will be absolute $**t, and the show will be a farcical sell-out." At this point they were interrupted by a man who wispered that Mr. Gates was waiting for them with their blank cheque.

The reaction from Japanese gamers has been mixed, many seem ecstatic about the new show, others have stated their unhappiness that someones creation will be taken from them and used in a game that they will have very little or no input into.

It has yet to be seen if this show will be a success with the quirky Japanese audience, and what the wider implications for the videogame industry are, but suffice to say the reaction thus far has been strong on both sides.
