So really we are waging war against the PS2. But why does the PS2 sell more. I do not know. The Gamecube is better in many ways but so is the PS2 better than the Gamecube in some ways. But lets not get into that technical JARGAN.
The real issue is the market, te public market for Games machines. I mean just looking to my left I can see my Sony Hi-Fi and my Sony VCR and my Sony Tv. My Dad believes that Sony are a reliable make of technical and home entertainment products. So he buys Sony hardware for his home entetainment system. But is that the view of the many many millions of people in this country. YES. Sony have established themselves as a well known reliable brand and making a Games machine was the gap in the market.
The Original Playstation was meant to be an addon for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System or SNES as we like to call it. And at that point in time the market had no real decent disc driven games machine. So when Sony decided to go alone and it went on the market it sold quite well. As they had got their reliable back ground many first time console buyers thought that it would be a good reliable choice for a games machine. That is what my cousen thought too.
However, if you are experienced like me and many many other people in this country you will think carefully about what to ask for at Christmas. The experienced gamer would think about games they personally thought were good. Games that would interest them and give them hours upon hours of enjoyment. But like I said the first time buyer is easily fooled.
Many people who had a Playstaion then went out and bought a PS2, just because of the enjoyent they got out of the original contraption. But why does this still sell better than the Gamecube.
TV ADVERTS are the key. I mean when I saw the brittish Gamecube adverts i thought wow. I WANT ONE. But the Gamecube adverts were simple and really inaffective. I can remember going to school and talking about the PS2 advert where the girl had a deformed head like an alien. That made me and my mates think. We had the PS2 in our brain. I wanted one too but i couldn't afford it so i never got one.
Nintendo have a very big and very good company. They can create great peices of equipment but they are a speicialist gaming company. Which in a way is very good because they are devoted to games. But like I said Sony make so many house hold items that they have almost at least something in everyone's home.
I still cannot explain why the PS2 still outsells the gamecube on its weekly selling figures. It is understandable that in total they have sole more because of the time gap between the release of the two consoles. But the real war is in the house hold name.
Sony is everywhere, they have Tv's stereos DVD playes and they are just a household name.
Nintendo are a household name in my house, but i know people who have not got anything Nintendo and they do not know the Nintendo name.
I am not a fan of Sony, but they do have the upper hand at the moment. This console war is not about the power of the consoles. It is about the house hold names

Plus SEGA's hollow promise of "up to 6 billion players" didn't exactly help things, either.

Brought out at the wrong time
Thats the same with Skoda and the Jaguar.
