Can you remember a time when there hasn't been a monkey in atleast one popular game at any one time? In the early eighties there was Donkey Kong, with many variations being released on the NES and in the arcades, and even on cassette consoles such as the ZX Spectrum! In the 1990s we had Donkey Kong again on the Game Boy, Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 and 3 on the Super Nintendo with Game Boy Versions to match, on the Nintendo 64 we've had Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing and even an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Monkey's have also appeared in many other games such as Yoshi's Island, the Sonic series, the Monkey Island series on PC, Super Monkey Ball and it's sequel, many a Mario Kart game, and some forms of monkeys have even appeared in the Turok series!
What is it about monkeys that makes the games they star in so popular and fun to play? They're cute, funny, like to show off infront of people in zoos, manned early space flights and came back super-intelligent, and they make funny noises. But why Monkeys? Why not cats or dogs? Why not squirrels that curse and swear and throw rolls of industry standard toilet paper at giant singing blobs of excrement? It's simple. They're not monkeys. Monkey's are the supreme beings that we all idolise. We all want to be monkeys, and we all want to live like them (I heard picking fleas off close friends is very relaxing). The ironic thing, as a Mr. Walt Disney showed us, Orangutans want to be like you-oo-oo, whereas you want to be like them. There's no scientific reasons as to why, but Monkeys rule.
Their games aren't always top notch, Donkey Kong 64 is proof of that, but you'll notice that monkey's are always made out to be the coolest creatures of all. Donkey Kong had his own 'Monkey Rap' that was even replayed in Super Smash Bros Melee, the only audio track to include any form of speech! They dominate other animals, as shown in Diddy's defeat of Whizzpig in Diddy Kong Racing, and Donkey Kong's riding on a rhino in Donkey Kong Racing (which may or may not ever be developed). Monkey's are so cool that Sega decided to make a monkeys-only game by the name of Super Monkey Ball, where monkeys run around in balls, fly, play billiards and even enjoy a game of minigolf. The possibilities for monkeys are endless!
At the end of the day, we're decendants of Monkeys, according to the theories of evolution, and being our closest relations (except parents, siblings, etc :)) we welcome their gaming appearances with open arms and a can of guinness.
After all...wahey we're the monkeys! And we're just monkeying around...
> No, Monkeys rule, ones with attitudes don't
DK and GonGon have attitude though...
To make the set complete, I gotta get myself some monkey balls....*ahem* I mean...
I rule.
> Just visited that site...Disappointed the Monkey Fan Generator link
> isn't a link....
It's a work in progress at the moment... may put the early version up by the end of the weekend...
Anyway... :D
Yes. Monkeys rule. There is no scientific reason as to why, but they do. There are also monkeys in some Zelda games... can't remember any in the 2 N64 versions, but there's a monkey in the SNES version, lots of them in Links Awakening on GB...
Yeah... monkeys rule. :D
