A bug is spreading wildly all over the World, and is infecting thousands of people by the day. It’s extremely contagious, and can lead to fits of laughter and frustration. Its name? Online gaming.

I was a doubter, oh yes I was. But then, thanks to some friends, I saw the light…and that light was Tactical Ops! Online gaming had confused me previously; I had no idea what a LAN was, or how to ‘host my own server’, and I’d be damned if I knew what a ping was (well actually, technically I don’t know what it is now, but I know what it means…sort of.)

My friends advised me that Tactical Ops was the game to have if I wanted to join the Russian Revolution…no, sorry, the online gaming Revolution. I managed to get hold of it, and a rather useful patch, and suddenly people are telling me to join some sort of jolt server. I followed their instructions, and to my delight, I was suddenly playing an FPS. The difference was, I was playing it with other people.

Nothing could be easier (apart from becoming a member of Special Reserve of course ;))! It was just like playing Tactical Ops in single player mode, but instead of horribly killing computer bots, I was murdering my own friends in cold blood! A sense of excitement grew inside me with every kill and every round that I won, and a sense of frustration when I suddenly had no money left and had to creep around with a Pistol until the round was over. I just couldn’t stop playing, and soon grandparents, relatives and other friends were complaining left and right about how they couldn’t phone us because it was always busy. This gave me another advantage, something I’m trying to implement now…

Dad: “Anthony, people keep saying they can’t get through, and it’s you on that bloody Internet all the time!

Ant: “Well, we’d never have that problem again if we got Broadband…”

Dad: “But we’ve just got a new PC!”

Ant: “And why not take advantage of that and get a new high-speed Internet connection!”

So far I haven’t got through to him, but I’m working on it. And anyway, 56k is usually fine as well. There’s always the odd bit of lag, but sometimes my ping is better than those with a 1mb Broadband connection.

Anyway, I was finally beginning to actually get some decent kill/death scores on Tactical Ops, when my mate got hold of the Unreal Tournament 2003 demo. Surely a bad thing, especially since I’d spent so long practising on TO.

WRONG! I’ve never had so much fun on a game in all my life! UT 2003 is fast, frantic non-stop killing action, and it’s fragging brilliant! If there is a better FPS out there (not counting adventure/RPG versions such as Deus Ex and Jedi Knight II), then I’ll eat nuts! And I hate nuts!

And even better, I’m actually quite good at it! You may notice I’m getting quite excited here, but the actual game comes out in just a couple of weeks! Imagine the new maps, the new players, the new weapons!

And it’s not just first-person shooters that can be played online. If, like me, you enjoy the thrill of taking your favourite football team to league and cup success, then Championship Manager 4 is a must buy game for you. Pit your team against your friends’; take part in leagues and tournaments with people from all over the globe!

Also, why not show off some of your Lightsaber-wielding skills, by purchasing the awesome Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and joining in with the multiplayer frenzy!

Quality online gaming may’ve looked a little doubtful in the past, but now you can’t get enough of it. Games consoles like the Dreamcast, X-Box and soon the PS2 are jumping onto the bandwagon by offering online capabilities, and as long as you have a half-decent computer and a modem that’s at least 56k then you should have no problem in catching the online gaming bug on PC!

So go on, just take your pick. The full game Unreal Tournament 2003 is released on October 4th and the all-new Championship Manager 4 will be hitting the shelves in a couple of months, but if that’s too long to wait then why not purchase Tactical Ops which is available NOW!

Anyway, I’ll stop writing now, because I’m off to blast my best mate to pieces with a Rocket Launcher.

Thanks for reading, Ant.

A firewall prevents me from playing most online games. I really want to play online games as well.

I really doubt it, as the many problems that it would entail, eg:
Different pricing structures
Different Infastructure
Some are on a 56k connection
etc etc.
It could work but it's just the question if whether the companies will actually co-operate, something that doesn't look too likely at the current time...

You getting/got an Xbox too?

Or is it just a case of:

"Once Xbox live takes off, Sony's plans are sure to follow".

Talking of which, do you think that Sony and MS will link their networks so Xbox owners and PS2 owners can play against each other on multiformat games?

Technically, that's actually two words. Or maybe three, if the X (which usually has a hyphen or whatever it's called between that and the word Box) counts as one.

But what the hell, online gaming rules. And to me, with X-Box Live the future looks a lot brighter than it has done so far for Bill Gates little plaything.

That doesn't really sound right...

Hmph! When that happened to me, it was an instant ban!
My parents are Tyrants! :-(

I've never really got into online gaming, purely because my PC is too crap (do any of the latest FPS games work on a P120 with 16Mb of ram and no 3D accelerator? ;-D), although I have tried a few of the older games like Jedi Knight.

Lag often ruins things (but that's probably my computer and connection too), which is why a console with Broadband would be fantastic.

There are two reasons for me wanting an Xbox.

1st, Rareware, 2nd Xbox live.
Hassle free online gaming, anytime you feel like it, and you can communicate with a microphone so no faffing around with a keyboard while you're trying to play.

And all for just £50 a year.

Once MS has cut the Xbox a bit more (it's going to happen!) and once I have broadband in the house (should happen within the next 6 months...), I might well get one.
