I was very bored last night. I stayed in and it was one of those nights that there was nothing worth watching on television so I just ended up watching what my mum wanted to watch.

So I sat down and watched ‘To Catch A Thief’ on BBC 1 and then ‘What not to wear’ on channel 4.

The first of these programs consists of Ex-Burglars advising members of the public how to best secure their home and make it relatively impervious to a break-in.

The second program as you may well know (and is inherent of the title) is a couple of ‘fashion experts’ who surprise a member of the public and then proceed to embarrass them mercilessly about what they have in their wardrobe. Then,(having thrown out most of the outfits that they own) they tell them what they should be wearing.

Do people really need to be told how to do everything? I do appreciate that some people may find this to be entertaining television but do these people really need to be babysat in such a manner?

Are we such a nation of retards that we need to be told how to lock up our house when we go out, and do we really need to be told how to dress ourselves and who are these people to dictate it to us?

I don’t know about you, but I have been dressing myself for years now, and I will freely admit to making some pretty terrible fashion mistakes in my time but I believe that I have learned well by my mistakes and I have now reached a pleasant fashion plateaux.

Surely it is far more satisfying to wear what YOU want to wear instead of being a fashion drone?

When you look at it we are being told how to do everything. How to cook, what to eat, how to live, how to dress and most importantly we are being told that our beloved homes should either look like a cold, unwelcoming operating room or a brothel.

Makes you wonder how we ever got by without them.

What is wrong with mullets?
WHAT THE f@*$ IS WRONG WITH MULLETS!!!

You know what!!! I'm gonna line up me and three of my friends, who all have very long hair/mullets and prove to you that they rock old skool style.

And anyway, those programs are stupid, because of the simple premise that fashion isn't mainstream, depending on who you are you wear different things. A gothic will not wear sports clothes, and vice versa. Errm, yeah.

Long live mullets!

I agree that people shouldn't be told what to wear, but there is a certain merit in telling people what not to wear...

e.g.

Mullets.
Trousers that aren't long enough
Socks with sandals.

Especially mullets. There's no excuse, and the world needs educating.

Well the police attribute 50% of burglaries, and their rise this summer, to people leaving doors and windows open during the day and night - so whilst the program may have been good common sense would be a lot more helpful.

The original copying thing was me getting a bit tongue tied kinda thing, I knew what I meant byut it didn't come out right lol :)

Bit of an oxymoron there. Anyway, i think the burglar programme had some merit, whilst the public know that burglars don't like locked doors, they are not so aware of the extent a burglar will go to enter your house, and since burglars are such sly buggers they are always finding new ways of robbing you blind. Therefore an "update" on their tactics is a welcome opportunity to reassess the security you have for your home.

As for the fashion one, well thats a given. I think they make the seasons "In" fashions up on the spot.

" Fashion is a form of ugliness that's why it changes every 3 months "

Or something like that

Couldn't agree more!

I saw this 'What not to wear' programme once, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

These so-called fashion gurus are a joke.

"Denim is soooo 1980s!"

Of course it is - that's why jeans still sell so well.

"Oh no, daaaahling - red is out! This season's colour is brown!"

Excuse me? Fashion has seasons? And who decides that red is 'out' and brown is 'in'? The only people who give a toss are the fashion gurus.

And of course, everyone who is 'fasionable' will be wearing brown simply because these people tell them it's 'in'.

Let's face it, if the gurus said that pink with yellow spots was "this season's colour" they'd all be running rund in Mr. Blobby outfits.

Yep, I hate all these kinds of programs too, the worst one is on UK Style, "Moving Up" it's called, people write up to them and ask for help moving house and choosing where to live, these two guys then come round and find them somewhere to move to and help them sell their house.

I'm sorry, but if you need a tv programs help you just to move then it's pathetic.

Other shows, like Ground Force, Changing Rooms e.t.c are just as bad because most viewers don't actually even try anything they see on tv, and if they did it's not exactly original copying is it ? As for fashion programs, never have or will watch them, I just wear what I like the look of so :P

Big Brother is also as bad, as is Celebrity Survivor - you're watching a group of people couped up somewhere doing either mundane or daft things.

As for Pop Idol......no comment from me, don't wanna get banned ! Here's the clean version = "a show devoid of thought, entertainment and geared towards selling merchandise which a section of the public will put little thought into buying and blindly shell out money for it, if a singing donkey were to win, then they'd still buy it, even though the winner will be a nobody in 2 years tops."

Ahem, good post :)

I despise programs like these. Fashion is what it is because it is a matter of personal expression.

If your personal expression is what someone else has demanded you wear, you're not fashionable, you're sheepish.

WEAR WHAT YOU PLEASE!
