I was just looking through my ‘Tiberium Sun Game Guide’ (as you do!) Can’t find the discs, but that is another matter………anyhoo. I came across the ‘light infantry’. The poor sods who go out, get killed for nowt, then get all their mates killed to boot. In Warcraft II it was the ‘Footman’ or the ‘Grunt’. Poor blokes. It may be their fault for being around at the time, but hey. They get forced into battle, against their will, and then are the first line of troops to often face a much heavier attacking force, that normally (and in C&C literally) rolls over them very easily. I mean they are expendable. But think! They are just as valuable as the next troop. I remember a mission in the original Command & Conquer. I was busily moving my commando force around, and then spotted one of my ‘minigunners’ taking on a damaged NOD Light tank. He won. I thought hey! He’s good! I plonked him an APC, and tried to take special care of him, but he got obliterated by an Obelisk Of Light, so that as over. But so what? He managed to destroy a tank by himself. I think we underestimate these smaller lighter units.

Just the other day, I was playing Mechcommander 2 over the net. I was engaging a light group of Anubis ’mechs (very light, agile and weak). I thought, right, now lets plan my next attack. But no! This guy was clever! He jump jetted the bloomin’ things around the map like there was no tomorrow! They managed to avoid all my gunfire, and managed to heavily cripple my heavier force. I ran away, but then air striked him! Te he! But the point is that he used a light force effectively, and that’s important.

In the face of heavier units, the grunt often dies. But en masse? NO! He wins, simply because he is brave, idiotic and badly led. But he often saves your behind in battle more than that stupidly expensive Stealth Tank! Of course, I’m not talking about the clinical strikes, amphibious landings, the clever enemy resource depletion. I’m talking about the ones who appear out of destroyed buildings, the ones who are bottom of the ladder, ready to fight, and always ready to die!

So, that’s right! I am sticking up for the grunt! The un-important, cheap ones who are expendable. But the next time they manage to down that last dragon by sacrificing their lives, or manage to get the final, lethal grenade onto a critical NOD structure, say thank you.

For without them, you’d be pretty well screwed.
