I just learnt of something really weird from my girlfriend. Her sister has just given birth to a baby girl and apparently she's doing some mandatory confinement period, a centuries-old tradition, which is to nurture the mother's health back to its pre-natal state.

You can't do any of the following for a month;

- Bathe
- Wash your hair
- Drink water
- Leave the house
etc.

Practically the only food to touch your lips must be cooked in sesame oil and ginger. The emphasis is on keeping the body warm and driving out fong (wind) which has entered the mother's body during childbirth.

The older generations kinda make sure the new stick to this, it's probably less hassle than dealing with your mother, motherinlaw and grandmothers heh.

I asked my girlfriend is she we do this too, she said yes. Eew well it is up to her but what a terrible way to start your new life as a mother. I don't think you would like to do this @ngel hehe, your hair is so precious I dont think you would survive a week without washing it ^_^

I know the feeling and it's not spiritual for me :D

Well maybe it could be in a devil sort of way, especially after a good night on the beer with a curry the night before :D

There are some really strange customs for childbirth everywhere, I think. Even here women never used to be allowed to go near milk on farms (and also during their period) for fear of curdling it.
