Such a shame. Endless FIFAs, Army Men and Tomb Raiders do nothing to push the medium forward – if anything, they end up pushing it back. Maybe once the massmarket penetration has reached saturation, and the boom period starts to peak, there’ll be more room for experimental, different and intelligent games in the West.
One can but hope.
As an afterthought, I should include Sony along with Sega and the Big N.
Sega have been more guilty of sequelising recently - Crazy Taxi, Monkey Ball, F355, JSR and they've been remarkably similar to the previous iteration. I can forgive them to a degree for such wonderfullness as Rez and Monkey Ball though.
Although it could be said that even Sega & Nintendo are beginning to slide down the slippery cliff face of sequeldom.
I would say that over 50% of the Sega & Nintendo games soon to be released are sequels.
