George W Bush is related to the British monarchy - giving him a distant claim to the throne.
The US President and Prince William are 17th cousins, experts have discovered.
The pair can trace a common ancestry back to the 15th century, genealogist said.
They are both descendants of Northamptonshire squire Henry Spencer.
The link to Prince William is that Spencer's younger son, William, founded the line that eventually produced wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill and Diana, Princess of Wales.
The link to Bush is more complex. Descendants of Spencer's older son, John, eventually settled in America in the 17th century.
They included Anne Marbury, who moved from Lincolnshire to Massachusetts during the 1600s.
She was later banished for religious reasons and killed by native Americans.
A direct descendent of hers, Harriet Fay, married James Bush, the great-great grandfather of the President.
Mr Bush is a great admirer of Sir Winston and keeps a bust of the former Prime Minister on his desk at the White House.
He borrowed some of Sir Winston's rhetorical flourishes when addressing Congress following the September 11 attacks.
The link between the families was made by researchers at US genealogy company MyFamily.com, which has announced a collaboration with the Public Record Office in London.
A spokeswoman for MyFamily.com said the discovery about the President's connections to the royals was only made recently and further research was ongoing to find out more about Henry Spencer, who lived in Badby between 1420 and 1478.
