A question has been hanging over my head for a while now that I want you to listen to if you will and by for a while I mean a few months and by I want you to listen to I mean I’m going to tell you regardless. The question is “Are expecting too much from our games?”

The SNES for instance, Turtles in Time springs to mind, average graphics for it’s time and not so good animation yet still one of the most enjoyable games ever played, the same can be said for Super Mario World plus countless others you could probably think up.

Nowadays though it has to “have it all” to even be considered a quality title, there’s a whole new standard set which I suppose stands to reason really. A new better console comes out you expect new and better games to go along with it, the problem is are we expecting too much?

Are we dismissing some of those would be 90% plus titles we otherwise wouldn’t, magazines seem to control most of what we perceive as a good game but that’s their job it’s just that most games get undermined by the utterly brilliant ones that come along once in a blue moon, remember WCW Vs NWO N64 game, if I remember correctly (and I do) the then known N64 magazine even admitted the game grew on them and a better score should have been given out.

Let me clear up what I’m trying to say here, remember the SNES and the Megadrive days as well as the N64/PS days, now in your head try and list the times you stayed up late/got up early playing games, the amount of times I would be playing a game at night only to finally throw in the pad only to realise that it’s 6:00 in the morning, I must say this happened a lot more times in my SNES days. This boasts the question of are games being developed to look brilliantly rather than play brilliantly or are my levels of what makes a good game too high?

Thing is ever since the N64 games being released died off and attention panned over to the Gamecube's launch I stopped playing games. Fair enough I had my small multiplayer bursts every now and again but nothing that kept me glued to the screen straight through and into the wee hours of the morning. Games just aren’t gripping me like they used to so I ask myself, am I expecting too much? Has it become that after years of playing the best the gaming world has to offer that I’m expecting too much from what I play?

So there was a huge gap between the N64's demise and the Gamecube's launch where I didn't play games. Now I doubt this was the reason for loosing interest in the actual playing the games as the whole launch buzz kept me interested but while this was happening quite a few of my friends purchased themselves PS2’s, so I would be sitting there watching them play and listen to them gloat about GTA3 and the like. I would be secretly telling myself that once I have the Cube it shall be them that shall see.

Then the launch came, great, I got my console and my games at launch, played and generally had fun (and I was right my friends totally loved Luigis Mansion) but now it's happened again, I find myself not playing again, I haven’t played my Cube for a while now, it's not that I don't like it because I do it's just that I feel I'll be playing for the sake of it and not because I want to as such. Hmm that's not right, there's nothing enticing me like it used to (yeah that's better) anyone else experiencing this?

So I deterred back to some of my other consoles such as the underrated Dreamcast. I went and purchased myself the apparently awesome Shenmue but what happened I lost interest quite quickly although giving it the benefit of the doubt I slogged through it a while but couldn’t see the great game Dreamcast owners often bragged about, personally I think it’s the game far too much talking and too little action for an RPG. Very beautiful graphics mind, which goes back to what I was saying earlier.

Oh and I'm not becoming more mature, that'll never happen. Me, growing up and out of games? Don’t think so, I love them it’s just nothing is gripping me like I feel it should, it’s as though I'm more interested in the gaming news that spirals around rather than actually playing these games.

So are the games getting worse?
Is this a case of too many milked genre’s?
Or is it me, am I expecting too much?

Well done on the GAD. I'm not playing my GameCube as much now, last time I played it was Saturday. The next game I'll get will be TimeSpillters 2 on a count of GAD, but now that has been delayed till October 27th I will have to wait a while :(

Oh I intend to :)

Hopefully this will hook me in once more, I'm pretty sure it will but doubtful it will fill the gap long enough for Zelda or another blockbuster game.

Totally agree with Nomad Soul too, games are just entertainment and they do that job for me just dandy.

Lol! I used to do the exact same thing.

That's why I've stopped getting myself hyped and I expect mediocrity.

Infact, the games that have impressed me the most were the ones I anticipated to be crap.

I thought that Worms sounded stupid.
I played it, and worshipped the franchise for nearly 2 years!

I thought Goldeneye would be just another FPS, which didn't work properly for consoles. I played it. And bought an N64 for the game.

It goes on...

The problem I have with gaming is that I visualize the types of games I'd like to play, yet 99% of the games available don't live up to my expectations.

But having said that, maybe I expect too much. Games are just games.
If it's enjoyable, then it's good. If it's not, then it's bad. Games are just simple entertainment really - that's all.

Expectation is part of becoming a games expert.

To me, it matters little whether I drink a wine from 1999 or 1962.
A wine expert will understand the difference though.

Someone who's never seen a TV before would be amazed at a flickering black and white screen. Most of us "colour hardened" TV watchers wouldn't be able to stand it.

Someone who's often hungery would eat the bread crusts that others would throw away.

Anyway, the reason why you haven't played your Gamecube is because there haven't been any really quality releases since Pikmin in June.
It's been the same with all of us.
If you REALLY want to play again, buy yourself Resident Evil or pick up Super Mario Sunshine in about 3 weeks or so.

And your gamesplaying will recommence. :-)
