You know how it is:

Higher resolution graphics, more textures, more polygons, more detailed bit-mapped backgrounds, high quality speech and sound, slightly bigger game... etc.

The character models, for example for much more detailed and need more space to store all the information. They're also far more complex with the animation and everything...

I reckon there's a far lot more FMV in there as well...

Still, if a game as big as Zelda can fit on 32Mb, 1.5 Gb is more than enough in most cases - most of the space is taken up by "expendable" FMV etc...

I was talking about in terms of wondering around in the game.

Yep.

According to the official Nintendo specs, it's a 1.5GB capacity disc.

Using compression, you can obviously get more - but decompression slows down loading, as the data has to be decompressed after reading.

The other infamous argument is that GC has lower loading times than PS2 and Xbox. As I've explained elswhere, the area in which GC would achieve this is in seek time, not data transfer rate - and the seek time is mere milliseconds.

But if a disc contains compressed data, decompression time will most likely increase the load time way beyond the other two systems, considering that they can hold up to 8.5GB uncompressed on a DVD9-format (single-sided, dual-layer) disc.

Also bear in mind that there are some things you can't or shouldn't compress, such as video data. I don't know what format the each system uses for FMV video, whether it's a standard format (MPEG, AVI etc.) or proprietary formats. Most video formats have their own built-in compression, and you can't compress them further - so a 200MB video sequence (such as the Resident Evil intro) will swallow 200MB of space, compressed disc or not. Put a few of those in a game, and your disc space soon disappears.

As PS1 Resi did not even fill one 650MB CD (including FMV sequences), I'm not sure what they've done to expand the game so much, which is why I was surprised to see it arrive on 2 discs, even accounting for a few extra locations, higher resolution pre-rendered backdrops and better character models.

Assuming no compression was used, two 1.5GB discs would be bad enough. If compression WAS used and the disc capacity is 3.5GB, then that's even worse!

So yes, I do still have reservations about the GC's disc size! :-)

Sure it was 3.5 or something?

Not sure now, anyways, THATS HUGE for a game.

Just to let you know. :)

Morrowind is 1GB and thats the biggest game I have ever seen, so big that my small pathetic brain can't imagine how big it trully is. Infact, if it was measured with a small tape measure, I am sure it would take a very long time to measure that game... yeap.

I could have sworn the GC discs are 1.5GB.

Or are the Resi discs bigger? I know Resident evil 2 was the largest cart for the N64...

3.5GB on the disk? some games 2 Disks at the same price (well Resident Evil is the same price as Tekken4). Thats 7GB or thereabouts.

Still have reservations?

You like the machines, but that's not going to stop you from provoking the fans now, is it? :-P

Anyway, you've got this soft spot for the PS2, so you naturally stand by it.
Likewise, even though I'd love to own an Xbox and PS2 and think they're very good, I'd never rate them above Nintendo and would remain a "Ninty", of some sort... :-)

Everyone has their little favourites.

Sonic Rav loves the Gamecube, but DON'T YOU DARE try tell him that Nintendo are the best. After all, Sega are sooooo much better! ;-D
