Capcom and SNK. Two of the greatest 2D beat-em-up makers ever. Recently, with their teaming up, we've been given the chance to live out our fantasies, with our favourite faces from King of Fighting and Street Fighter scrapping in harmony. Who'd ever have thought it possible, that we could be fighting Iori as Ryu on a tiny little GameBoy Advance? Recently, we've heard of the upcoming Batman vs Superman film, with the two greatest superheroes of all time (Batman being way better, of course) locking horns in a surefire smash hit...heck, even the Aliens vs Predator deal is back on! The world is going crossover mad, and frankly, I'm glad. In fact, maybe it was time gaming stepped it up a gear...

I've mentioned Capcom vs SNK, and Aliens vs Predators. Two very succesful games that took two (well, four) very succesful franchises and superglued them together. The hugely popular Super Smash Brothers series has let people take their favourite Nintendo characters, from the obscure Ice Climbers to the instantly recogniseable Donkey Kong, all on one gorgeous looking stage. On one screen you could have Yoshi, Kirby and Pikachu all flying around, pulling punches and grabbing powerups...its a dream come true for many a fan. But let's think even bigger. Forget the novelty of taking two games and essentially squishing it into one...I mean, after a while I don't care if I'm kicking the asss of an SNK character or a Capcom one...how's about taking two individual characters, hugely popular in their own right....and putting them together?

Aliens and Predators are whole RACES...but what about if we took the wise-cracking, all-action shoot-first-ask-questions-later Duke Nukem...and paired him up with the sultan of sneak, Solid Snake? The whole 'odd couple' thing may be an old cliche in Hollywood (think Rush Hour, for instance) but for the video-gaming world, it would be a totally new idea. For one level, you could be blasting your way out of a maximum security prison as Duke, ripping the pins from grenades faster than you can say something very rude...and then, you could replay it as Snake, creeping up behind a guard and knocking him out, before stashing him in a cupboard. Games like Resident Evil have done the 'two playable characters' malarky, but with two figureheads of a genre, with styles so contrasting, not only would this be a blooming great game to play, it would appeal to twice as many people!

Imagine if Square and Nintendo teamed up? With the latest truce these two have seemingly agreed to, perhaps it is not so much a pipe dream as it once was that Squall and Link could stand toe to toe, looking moody as they brandish swords and sort out hit points...teaming up stunning FMV sequences and great twisting plots with amazing boss battles and original touches, this could be the best RPG EVER. I mean, just looking at Kingdom Hearts (another good crossover example), Square have taken the big Disney stars and recreated them in pixel form, making a great game in the process...imagine collaborating with a company such as Ninty, themselves proven to be one of the best games makers around. Maybe we could see characters crossing into other genres. Remember Sub Zero Mythologies, the Mortal Kombat action-y story type thing? Well what if we had someone like Luigi in an FPS, or conversely, Max Payne in a platformer?

I have, of course, saved the most mouth watering prospect 'til last. With Sega and Nintendo such buddies lately, working together on stuff like F-Zero X, maybe...just maybe...we could see the two most popular gaming mascots of all time in the same game! Sonic, with his coolness, super speed and agility - Mario, with his charm, jumping skills and tricks. The two could combine, much like Superman and Batman. Perhaps they would be enemies, each fighting the other to gain the title of best hero ever? Dr Robotnik versus Mazza? Bowser pitted against Sonic? Tails and Luigi? Knuckles and Toad? The whole cast could get involved!

Of course, maybe I'm just getting ahead of myself. People have doubtlessly been thinking of such a 'supergame' ever since the two series' started...but if it is ever going to happen, it is going to happen soon. There was talk of some Sega guys being in SSB:Melee, but it ended up being nothing but the rumour mill. Again, people suggested an Adult Link could be in Soul Calibur 2, but nothing doing. We go a step forward, but then it seems we go two steps back. No doubt we'll see a lame 'Batman vs Superman - The Movie' game...but how about the GOOD stuff, huh?

Any of you got some good crossover ideas? I'd like to hear 'em. Thanks for reading, and sorry about the title ;-)

Wonderful...
