Reality, or what we consider reality, is always going to be questionable. The Matrix was the first modern film to take the concept of imagined realities for it's main theme, but science has long suggested that parallel universes could exist. You've probably heard of the more common of these; the world where Germany won the war, where Japan A bombed America, where England wins the World Cup every time and the one where Margaret Thatcher continues to rule the country with an iron grip.
If they do exist, and this world is but one reality, then that raises the idea as to whether people could exist across realities ? Brain aching yet ? :) No ? Good... Maybe they only ever exist in one, switching between them unknowingly, triggered by a certain event. The most obvious would be a point at which a person would die.
Last year, a french scientist had this same theory, search it out on the net and you'll find it, eventually ( too tired to do so myself but this is true ). He theorised that if he were to stand against a wall, then have someone fire a machine gun at him, he would live, because in our reality he'd die, but to him, from his point of view, he'd live - the bullets would miss, the gun jam e.t.c Now, why didn't he try it out ? His wife was apparently not keen on the idea, understandably ! Think about it though, major changes in how our reality is are usually caused by deaths, the war on terror by the 9/11 deaths, the Balkans conflict by ethnic cleansing, WW2, and so on. If these deaths were suddenly avoided then they'dchange the world differently.
Take WW2, had it never happened then the Cold War would never have been fought - in theory.
But, even if there are different realities, does it matter ?
If some of the scientists are right we could be switching between realities unknowingly, whilst other scientists say it works differently, and more say there are no other realities.
Does it matter if this is all we have ? Really, if we believe this is the one reality we get then, even if it isn't, does it make a difference to us or our lives ? I don't think so because we still do things and take actions based on what we believe to be real, whether that real is real doesn't matter, like religion, you just have to believe.

By the way, is an ashtray an ashtray until someone puts ash in it? Isn't it just a tray until someone puts ash in it? And what if they don't?
