Is the PS2 any good at playing DVDs? We want to get a DVD player, and also have tons of PS1 games. We could get a PS2 now, but if the DVD playback quality is naff then we'll get a full blown DVD player and wait until January to get a PS2 when they drop the price again.

There are many DVD players out there by many different companies such as Panasonic, LG-Phllips, etc, etc, but ofcourse the one included with the Playstation 2 is a Sony DVD player (why would Sony go elsewhere when they make them themselves?)

As for picture quality - well it's much better than cassette, so what's there to worry about?

(see, even a Nintendo fan like me can say something good about the PS2 :) )

One very important thing to bear in mind is that the PS2 cannot play back DVD's through a scart cable in RGB quality without a DVD Region X disc.

Without the disc you have to use the composite cables in the box and they give a better than video quality, but not as good as scart playback from a proper DVD player.

With the disc, you have to insert the Region X disc first, then put the DVD you want in, then start it up. Region X does let you easily watch DVD's from other regions though.

Really, it's down to how bothered you are about picture quality and ease of use, if you didn't have a lot of PS1 games then I'd say go for an X box - with it costing £15 more (you need a console anda DVD remote) but you get RGB scart playback without messing around with discs, plus a decent remote, Sony themselves do an official remote filled with many useless buttons.

PS2 DVD player is exactly like any other..... in my opinion.

Ive seen many people saying that its not as good as actual DVD players but I dont see any difference.

Playing a game, watching TV, watching a DVD - whats the difference?

Nothing.

Picture quality is fine.

And PS2 rules.

Go buy PS2.

Now.
