Tottenham striker Les Ferdinand has tipped Glenn Hoddle to become the first man to coach England twice.
Hoddle was sacked as England boss in 1999 following his controversial comments about disabled people.
But veteran striker Ferdinand, who featured at international level under Hoddle, believes the former England boss is proving his worth at club level with Spurs.
Hoddle fumes after Spurs defeat
Hoddle's side missed out on a return to the top of the Premiership table when they squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at Fulham on Wednesday.
But Ferdinand insists the best is yet to come.
"There's not a shadow of doubt in my mind that he wants to prove people wrong.
"I suspect he will," Ferdinand said.
Striker Ferdinand is a fan of Hoddle
"I always thought he was sacked as England coach for the wrong reasons.
"He had an opinion about something he believed in and he voiced it. What's wrong with that?
"He should have been judged on results and there are a lot of players who think the same," Ferdinand added in an interview with the Daily Star.
Hoddle's first priority remains at White Hart Lane, but Ferdinand is convinced he will lead his country for a second time before his managerial career comes to an end.
"I see him as England coach again. Somewhere down the line he'll return - not after Sven-Goran Eriksson perhaps, but one day Glenn will be in a position of strength. He's young enough.
"First he has a five-year plan for Spurs and you can sense things are happening.
Hoddle named manager of the month
"I think he is tougher mentally than when he was England coach. Who wouldn't be after what happened?"
Hoddle was in charge of the England team for three years from 1996 to 1999.
He led them to the second round of the World Cup finals at France 98 after securing qualification with an outstanding performance in a goalless draw in Italy.
As a manager, he guided Swindon to the Premiership and took Chelsea to the 1994 FA Cup final before sealing a place in the Worthington Cup final in his first season with Spurs.
What a joker. A manager with no sucess in the past touted as england manager again. Glenn Hoddle obviously as a chelsea supporter is closely linked to my club, but I was in shock when I heard that he was to be England manager and considered him to be one of the worst choices for the job. The one hing he did do right for chelsea was he sign ruud gullit, the signing that made chelsea a force again. As gullit was a major name in world football he had contacts and was able to bring in the likes of Desailly. The only thing Chelsea owe hoddle for is signing gullit and even that was masterminded by colin hutchinson. I really do not rate him as a manager, and even if i do dislike spurs i feel they better than him and could have appointed a higher standard manager.
Morientas to Tottenham? LMAO that just cracked me up
Martin O'neill (it hurt to say that as he is a foreigner!)
El Tel (i think he is a top national manager, undefeated wasn't he in normal time!)
That is it they are the only two i'd consider at the moment for the england post. (no ferguson a he is crazy and scotish!)
Anyone would be better than some Johnny Foreigner like Eriksson!! :P
I too agree that Hoddle was sacked for all the wrong reasons, and I do believe that he could do us no extra harm if he were to come back.
But the question is, would the FA let him back??
After Eriksson's time, those MUPPETS at the FA may feel that importing from abroad is the way to go (unforunately)!
The only thing I didn't like about Hoddle was that he took-over from Venables. I hated him at first, but once I saw that we weren't doing that badly, my mind began to change.
Everyone deserves a second chance!
If Hasselbaink or Zola left Stamford Bridge and wanted to come back, would you let them?? And what about Vialli - that's possible you know!
