Think about it. What has happened to Rareware over the years? Well after Goldeneye 007, (Dr)Doak and some of the other main coders left Rareware to work on games such as Timesplitters. Rare have also found themselves with a limited budget for staff, meaning that they couldn't make many games at once, reducing the number produced over the years resulting in only a few games for the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color. Admittedly, the few that were released were some of the best, such as the highly acclaimed Perfect Dark and the cutsey but challenging Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie games, but Rareware could have done a lot more for the Nintendo 64 if the money was available.
Over the last couple of years, Rareware announced many a new game for Nintendo systems. For the GameCube there was Klameo: Elements of Power, Starfox Adventures and Donkey Kong Racing, plus talk of Perfect Dark 2. And for the Game Boy Advance there was Donkey Kong: Coconut Crackers, Banjo Kazooie and Sabre Wulf. So far, none of them have been released, and most of them cancelled. Despite the Microsoft take-over rumour, which Special Reserve claims to be very likely, Rareware will (hopefully) still be releasing Starfox Adventures sometime before Christmas, but it is highly likely that this will be Rarewares first and last GameCube release. Ofcourse, Nintendo are the franchise owners of Starfox, so the game is bound to have the go ahead for a UK release anyway, but it will still become one of the most famous games of the early 21st Century as it will be marking a turning point in Rareware and Nintendo's company histories.
So what will happen to our favourite Rareware titles if Microsoft have bought out Rare? Well if you're a Donkey Kong or a Starfox fan, nothing will happen other than Nintendo will be making future games themselves or employ a second or third party to develop these franchises into more titles. If, however, you wanted a sequel to Rare's Perfect Dark, and Banjo Tooie, you'll more than likely have to purchase an X-box to play these games. Ofcourse, that's a bit of a kick in the nuts for Nintendo as these were some of the Nintendo 64's top selling games - but that's what you get for selling your shares in a company. It is also a kick in the nuts for some X-box fans who claim that games such as Banjo Kazooie are kiddy games. Maybe this will change their minds, maybe not, but in reality we know that the X-box fans are going to benefit from the Rareware buyout.
But why am I supporting the take-over by Microsoft? Well why not? After all, despite Rareware's brilliant games, I have been disappointed with the wait I've experienced for games such as Starfox Adventures, which I am still looking forward to, and for games such as Sabre Wulf and Banjo Kazooie: Gruntilda's Revenge on the Nintendo handheld. I was also disappointed to see Rareware cancel their stunningly beautiful racer Donkey Kong. So I'm starting to get sick of the company. I know it may not be Rareware who are to blame for delays and cancellations, and Nintendo may have even played their part in the whole thing, but it's Rareware who get the immediate blame as it's them who's name is on the box. It's not like Nintendo can't survive without Rareware anymore. The GameCube already has a stunning array of games on the shelves at the moment, many third party, which is something Nintendo seemed to lack with their 64-bit machine. Maybe it would be nice to see the under-dog (microsoft) have a bit more support. The X-box isn't too popular at the moment, and Rareware could be the beneficiary factor that 'saves' them from a plummet to Dreamcast status. Ofcourse, being a product of Microsoft, the X-box couldn't get that bad having almost an endless supply of money behind it, and the possibility to earn much more back, ofcourse the X-box wont need 'saving'. It just needs a popularity boost at the moment.
So I'll have to fork out on another £160 to play some new Rareware games in the future? So? It's not like the X-box is full price anymore, and there are bound to be sales and deals available for me to be able to afford a better package. I have been thinking about purchasing an X-box for a couple months already and a sequel to Perfect Dark might just convince me. I didn't buy the Gamecube for Rareware though. I bought the GameCube because I like Nintendo's games. I bought the GameCube because Nintendo have always kept me happy with their hardware and their software. Sure, most of their games may look like they have been designed with young kids in mind, and that's kind of true, but I still find the games both entertaining and challenging and that is why I purchased the GameCube. It would be the same reason for me purchasing an X-box in the future - the games. If there are a few more games that catch my eye that I haven't already got on another system, then maybe I will buy one. Rareware, possibly being exclusive to Microsoft (other than the Game Boy Advance - which isn't a threat to Microsoft - yet) will be the deciding factor.
So all this fuss about the Rare question. It's a good thing really. It'll mean more games from Rare and will boost the X-box's sales (there's no doubt about that). I mean, what have Rare done for Nintendo? Not much for the last two years I'll tell you that. What do you think about the Rare question?
Rareware.
They're a UK based videogames company. Although Britain started off the home videogaming business (sure there were BBC/Acorns, but they cost more than a small fortune and only took off for schools), Ultimate (Rareware) making many a decent game on the ZX systems, you now have to be a VERY good bunch of developers to get the funding in the UK to make videogames.
Ofcourse, Rareware must have a big wad of dough stashed somewhere, but it costs money to make games, and without big backing from a company like Nintendo or Microsoft, the games may not end up making the profit that Rareware would like. There's no question about Rareware's support from Nintendo in the past anyway. A picture of Starfox Adventures, a Nintendo franchise yet a Rareware developed title, has been printed on every GameCube box. However, with rumoured tensions between the companies, it comes to no suprise that the company who put the word 'monopoly' in the dictionary have allegedly offered a large sum of money for Nintendo's share of the company.
Nintendo.
Nintendo, allegedly accepting £350m for a company that's only developed one game over the last couple of years? Ofcourse they're going to benefit. Sure, they're not going to have any control over one of the UK's best developers, but so what? They've got £350m to fund their own games or to buy many a crate of fosters for Mr. Miyamoto so that he can be drunk enough to think of many more a classic masterpiece like Pikmin. Anyway, Nintendo create their own brilliant games, and most of Rare's bestsellers were Nintendo franchises - Donkey Kong Country and Diddy Kong Racing to name but a couple.
Sure, Nintendo are allegedly selling Rareware to a major competitor, but if Nintendo were worried, they wouldn't have done it in the first place.
Microsoft.
They're allegedly spending quite a lot of money on such an unproductive firm, but with good reason to. Rareware's logo has appeared on so many hits over the years: Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Battletoads, Donkey Kong Country, and many more! They're mainly buying a well recognised developer and keeping them for themselves (except on the handheld market - for now anyways). They've allegedly aquired a major videogames developer, and that's one less for Nintendo and Sony as far as Billy Gates (gruff) is concerned.
Rare have 2 sides.
1 side of them rips off Nintendo ideas:
DK64, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie.. etc.
These games are generally good, but the only one to be trully exceptional was Donkey Kong Country on the Snes.
Beating Nintendo at their own game was never Rare's strongest point.
Then there's the other side to Rare, which makes games of it's own style:
Goldeneye, Jet Force Gemini, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Blast Corps and Perfect Dark.
More often than not, games from this side of Rare are nothing less than revolutionary.
Goldeneye sold far more N64's than Mario or Zelda did, and alongside Perfect Dark, it was the only N64 game that made Playstation owners trully jealous.
And because Rare's games are so large, detailed and complete, this means they take longer to make. As nice as Nintendo's current set of minature games are, I was also hoping for a large game that would last me.
Starfox will be HUGE!
I know Rare's games take an age to be released, but more often than not, they're well worth the wait.
I know a Nintendo gamesplayer can quite easily live without them, but they're certainly good enough to make the Xbox worth owning.
So far they have produced one game for the GC, Stafox that should be out very soon, and even this game has taken a while to finally get released. Other games are, kameo, which had some playable footage before the cube's release, Donkey Kong racing which has only been seen in FMV form and Perfect Dark, which has no info, screenshots or moving footage to suggest the game exsists beyond the drawing board.
They haven't exactly proven themselves to be great developers past the N64, nobody has played any of their games yet so no one can tell whether or not these developers are still the best thing since sliced bread. There are a whole host of great developers out there at the moment, who produce great games in a shorter development lifespan than rare. I won't loose any sleep if Microsoft does buy them, and I certainly won't buy an x-box because of them.
Also, I think it strange Microsoft think the company is worth $350million when the company doesn't have one next gen game released yet. A big gamble there, if it goes wrong than that’s more money pi#sed away trying to become more popular in the games market.
And no Dringo, Retro don't even TOUCH their brilliance! :-P
Yes, Nintendo don't need Rare. It won't be a huge blow to the Gamecube and there'll be plenty of great games without them.
They will be sorely missed.
The reason why their releases are so far between is because when a game does come out, it's so big, has so much depth, and is so brilliant, it blows most gamers away and lasts them much longer than your average game.
Starfox is much bigger than anything Nitnendo are planning at the moment.
Although a lot of Rare liscences are Nintendo owned, (possibly including Perfect Dark), it's the games devellopment, not setting/franchise that is more important.
Some devellopers have tried their hand at Mario and Zelda games and done an awful job. Zelda and Mario is what Nintendo make of them, not the names.
I personally will be getting an Xbox for Rare games, and they are most certainly the best console game develloper outside of Japan.
MS need them much more than Nitnendo do.
The only decent original/quirky games that MS have are coming from Sega.
MS can't rely on just ONE company, especially a multiformat one.
Rare get MS money and support, MS get great Rare games.
Xbox owners get classy games. Although Nintendo owners miss out, they've got plenty to play on anyway - and if MS keep cutting the Xbox price at this rate, by the time Rare get a game out for the Xbox, I'll be able to pick up MS's big machine for a fiver! :-D
Everyone's happy! :-)

So you ordered a US copy of Super Mario Sunshine without waiting for the Action Replay/Freeloader to be released first?
As Nelson would say: Ha ha!
And what's this about the company that would suprise me? I'm intrigued.
Besides, this Xbox live thing looks like it might hit a few snags in this country, with the lack of broadband around the country.
Nintendo will survive from this and it may well do them good if it makes them concentrate more on getting other third party support this time around.
I know plenty about the company that would surprise you. Especially over the recent events of the Freeloader.
They are an abysmal bunch, which i'm not going into details why. I have my reason's and discovered things, believe me.
And who was poking fun out of Rare because they haven't produced anything for the last 1.5 years? I just pointed out that Nintendo don't need Rare anymore, as the popularity the GameCube has reached without Rare so far proves.
And why do you hate Datel (sees tagline)?
And if SEGA is going exclusive to anyone then my moneys on Nintendo.
Rareware, in a way, will be a loss to Nintendo-no matter what way we all look at it. Regardless of your viewpoint on the matter.
Yes, we can all look at what Rare have produced in the last year or so....nothing; and poke fun at the matter. But what people are forgetting here is that they hold a key franchise being Perfect Dark and a few other potential franchise winners.
Perfect Dark, will be a big loss to Nintendo. It was Nintendo's only FPS franchise outside Metroid that really was only playable on a Nintendo Console and one that would have been worth buying.
Perfect Dark would have been a part and parcel in attracting more Mature gamers to it's ranks.
If indeed Nintendo did manage to sell their reputed 49% stake to Microsoft, I have to say they are a silly bunch of corporate fools.
Sure it would be a hell of a lot of money lying in the vaults of Nintendo's banks (A Staggering £250m) all good on that front, but what they seem to forget is that if they held on to that "grasping head-lock" on Rare, Microsoft would have surely have sunk further into obscurity-Dreamcast proportions-in the Gaming industry anyway.
Now, If the Rumours are true, Rare have been granted a new Rope from this deal-handed to them by their rivals Nintendo.
It's sad that the Gaming industry has come to this, Microsoft "We all knew" would flaunt their money in the faces of the gaming world, they did it to Sega trying to buy them out, they did it with Nintendo telling them to cancel the Gamecube for a buyout, they tried "their money filled hand" at Squaresoft, Rare- or should I say Nintendo going by the rumours seems to have bowed to this Corporate Behemoth at the last moment.
And that is sad, sad knowing that Nintendo have stooped this low, disregarding what potential their rival will get out of the deal- Microsoft will continue to grow, sucking and consuming, getting bigger-like a leach or parasitic organism eventually and quite possibly bringing the Industry to it's knees including Sony and even Nintendo themselves!.
And....you can't rule that out, heck no! I don't even think it will stop at the buyout of Rare (If it remains true) they will of course slowly but surely try their hand in buying out every respectible Company out there that they tried doing 15 months ago the bigger it gets!.
Nintendo, will more than likely be left to no other choice but to do a Sega and perhaps Sony will do too, if Microsoft continue this course of greed. And if IGN's Rumours remain true, "a high profile Company will have the rights for Sega games on a certain format...exclusively"...I wonder who that could be?
I thought, Nintendo would have realised Microsoft are thinking of a single format agenda!. Just like their Operating System idea, geez look at Windows, look at the court battles because of it, look at the number of business', homes that use Windows as their default Operating System!.
But yet out of all that gloom (Because, gloom it is) there is some brightness to grasp at in the Nintendo corner. If by just a little.
Namely the Rare Developed franchises that they held so dear that Nintendo have sole control over:
Banjo Kazooie, Donkey-Diddy Kong, Mickey Mouse (Yeah not great I know) and Star-Fox. Perhaps after all Nintendo are doing the right thing? Perhaps after all the Sega rumours are a deal with Nintendo for exclusivness or even Sony?
Who knows, but one thing is for sure- we should find out pretty soon and to be honest, reagrdless of the outcome I will have some sort of relief knowing the truth, no more annoying Rare rumour news to constantly look at and to confuse us.
Geez, wouldn't it really annoy you if this was all a big publicity stunt on behalf of Rare and Nintendo? My head hurts thinking of the consequences of that, but I don't think that outcome will materialise.
For too long now this rumour has been running rampant, changing to different leads, first it was Activision then it was EA being hinted at and now Microsoft. But this time round I think it is all true, or mostly anyway.
Rareware (Even until recently) on their Web-Site have dodged every question aimed at them regarding the story, a simple "YES or No" would have done, but yet they didn't do that. Nintendo too have more or less dodged the Question, a simple yes or no would have done, but they refuse to give firm details also.
Microsoft even, will not even do the simple task and confirm the bloody thing. Thats how rampant and true these rumours seem to be to me, it's just too much 'In your face' at the moment to be "Not true".
But I will say it again, this is "not" a good thing for the Industry, it might be good for X-Box owners ( I own one) in the long run, but for Sony and Nintendo it is a bad move, a stupid move for Nintendo giving in like that.
If it does happen to be true, shame on them! and if Sony falls flat on its face with the PS3...you know who to blame, not Microsoft, Blame Nintendo.
This will be the biggest Move that Microsoft has made since it's move into the gaming industry.
Sony and Nintendo will feel it in the future, bowling them over like a Nuclear bomb.
