Ok,

I'm going to try and set up a home network this weekend at home, i have 2 desktops ,a laptop and i want an extra port, therefore i would need a 4-port hub. i have a couple of questions.

1. What sort of Hub do i need?
2. How much more expensive will it be if i was to make a Wireless Network?
3. If i do a wired connection i will need about 15m of wiring to be able to connect all the malarkey up, will this be expensive?
4. Will it be difficult to set-up?
5. Overall how much will it cost for a normal connection?
6. Overall how much will it cost for a wireless connection?

Thanks a lot,
NAJ

soz for the typo's and i was gonna say a switch is faster at transfering data but only by a fraction, i brought a kit by D-Link to start off at abou £70 but it's been updated a lot since then.

you don't need any help on setup then?

then any other info?

wireless network you looking at a few hundred quid maybe at least mate plus they only work at 10-12mb/s

if you can get what they call a 'switch' it basically looks like a hub but is much faster.

i doubt you need anything great by a kit is a good start, i take it you laptop has a PCMCIA network card or a built in one?

the kit should give 2 longish cables and the network cards. if your using XP then it's easy to set up and so is WinME but 98 on the other hand hmmmm your gonna have to use a proxy.

but you can also mix OS systems, before i put xp on all my comps i had 1 on XP, 1 on ME and 1 on 98 and they could share files, printers and even my scanner LOL.

hope that helps you out, wireless is nice but still exspensive.

er im not great with these things but i setup my home network. I went tpo PC World (errrrr) and bought a netgear package which claimed to be all i needed. To my shock and horror this was actually the truth. it had a 4 port Hub and 2 network cards (and i bought some more). I expected 1 metre cables and to my shock and delight it had 15 metre cables. Can't remember what the package was called but it cost a bout £60-70 and was made by Netgear and in a mainly purple bow. If you ask them and you find a store assistant in there with a brain they should know which one i mean.

Oh yes and I'm planning to share a net connection through this, what sort of connection do you suggest?
And share a printer.
And play games (main reason).

Thanks again.
