Sony's idea to move straight to ADSL is not good. ADSL is going to be expensive, subsidised or not, and not many people will want to make that move. 56k modems on a console should be enough, with proper programming, to play across the internet in Europe and to some extent in the rest of the world, ISDN would be more ideal, but would still mean changing phone lines and adding more expense to your phone bill.
The ideal would be to have cable or the new system that will allow signals to pass through electricity lines. This, however, is still in the planning stages and won't happen for at least another 2-3 years. In the meantime we will have to 'put up' with either a very high priced phone bill or slower connection. At least the Dreamcast allows you to surf the net and send emails through your TV, and play games - which those new e-mail TV gadgets can't do.
