So, first rare are going multiformat, then selling themselves to microsoft.

Now, i've not spoken in depth about this to any xbox owners, but i imagine, even if they don't admit it, after some thought, they'd be drooling over their keyboards at the thought of rare making games for xbox.

Meanwhile, us nintys have been forced to consider what we'd lose without rare.
Their calibre is proven through goldeneye, sustained despite the free radical team's departure with perfect dark, and further displayed with the likes of jet force gemini, donkey kong 64 and soon starfox adventures, to name but a handful.

Even the ps2 owners get in on the act via the infamous christmas card and ensuing multiformat rumours.

This puts rare in a pretty unique position - not only have they captured consumer attention in a way unparalleled for a mere developer, they seem to be building the foundations of a cross-format fanbase.

Could gamecube owners be pursuaded to follow rare to xbox? Or other consoles' owners to gamecube? At least as a second console, i could see it happen.
Even if not, it must affect the educated gamer buying their first of the current generation of consoles. But i think rare is a powerful enough label for the former to be a significant possibility. Heck, if rare upped and made their own console, i for one would give it some real thought when i got my bank statement.

And that certainly gives rare power within the industry.

Is this what rare have been working for? Stunts to remind people just what they can do, keeping the public on the edge of their seats and reminding the three big companies just how much they're worth?

If so, one would have to ask why.
The rumour mill is throwing figures of over a third of a billion dollars at the microsoft buy-out situation. If it's happened, rare's price would no doubt have been bolstered by their christmas marketing stunt.
If it hasn't, and this is one more card played by rare in building and flexing their power, the question of why still remains.

Is there a sale in the pipeline, for which rare are building for their best possible price?
Maybe it's to promote game sales?
Perhaps they want to throw some weight around in their relationship with nintendo? Show who wears the trousers?
Or will there be a rare console on the way?
*coughyeahrightcough*

Whatever the future holds for rare, and i expect it's something significant, it's going to be a lot harder to ignore developers from now on.

Rare are changing things.

So, as SR news would have us believe, Rare have already gone.
Still, just a rumour, and they don't indicate a source on which it's based.

This 49% thing also intruiges me. Everyone seems to have different figures, nobody really seems to know what steak ninty own(ed).

As it is, the only thing i see this changing is that if the rumours are true, it's too late for the deal to still fall through.
But they *could* still be wrong.

On a slightly different note, it seems like if rare do/have gone, they could be finding the same niché in the xbox market as they had with the N64 - taking the lions share of the work on high quality exclusives, especially amongst 2nd/3rd parties.

Maybe that's what they want? To be important to their consumers. Ninty finally have an abundance of great games from many sources. With microsoft, they could arguably be the main player again.

It's such a high profile title that it'd seem like madness not to bring it back.
And as halo shows, sci-fi fps titles can do reasonably well on the xbox.

But who's to say that the X-Box will now DEFINITLEY be getting the likes of Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong rather than the GameCube??

After all, the majority of Rare's games have been best-suited to the Nintendo consoles, will MS fans take-to-them easily?

They'll either get all-new Rare games, or one or two of the others we've seen before - like Jet Force Gemini.

Because it's on GBA! and.... and.... erm... it's gotta be!

The thing is, Nintendo have the last say in whether Microsoft can have Rare because of their shares. So if Nintendo want a STACK of money, and don't mind loosing Rare, it's up to them.

Maybe!

Yeah, boy was that a surprise. Absolutely nothing, then buy NOM one day, open it up and see massive "Diddy Kong Racing" section. Check the information and it's being released next month!

As for this whole going to microsoft thing it's just a rumour, surely the fact that Nintendo part own Rare will stop anything like this from happening. Maybe it's all an attention scam, who knows, getting quite annoying now, no Rare games for a long while.

Maybe one will pop up out of the blue soon enough though, ala Diddky Kong Racing on the N64.

Narr, it's a goddam X-Box exclusive. Soddin' annoyin' that!

Thing with games like that though, is how long there exlusive. I hope Buffy does come to Cube at some point! I did hear a new GBA version is in the works though, cos that last Gameboy version was a tad pap!

i sold my xbox today, just becuase rare might be going to them doesnt bother me. Developers are getting better every year and i would be wuite happy with TS2 and turok and die hard instead of PD0, which will be as bad as the last game.

Well, I heard that ages ago though, so maybe it's since become Xbox only...

Dunno if it bothers me Rare going to Microsoft anymore.

Fair play to them for getting a huge payment. Perhaps now they'll be able to expand and relase games just a tad more frequently.

It might persuade me to get an X-Box. Specially if there's another price cut by the end of the yr. I'll then be able to pick up a 2nd hand one even cheaper!
I want an X-Box for Dead or Alive 3, even though there's the chance 4 might come out on Gamecube. And the BUFFY game!

:)
