With all the C&C games out and other similar strategy games, sometimes i look at the units and think how great it'd be to be able to pilot them yourself :-)
Like say you just created a bunch of jet fighters to attack your opponents base, it'd be so great to pilot one of the jets and lead the attack yourself :-)

Or maybe you could organise an attack by sea and control one of the warships or a submarine :-)
I think units should fight a little more intelligently too. Instead of just being a sitting target firing its weapons, units should move around, jets having dogfights for example.

Even if your not planning an attack, it could be fun to control a fast vehicle to explore the terrain and reveal more of the map. Imagine controlling a ground unit when your forces have a large ground battle with the enemy.

I think the game to come closest to this is Battlezone. But its only limited in its vehicles and your an actual pilot. My idea is that if your vehicle is destroyed, your simply returned to viewing your base in the usual manner. You would feel so much more part of the game and it would make the maps so much more interactive, especially as the graphics get so much better on consoles, eventually you could take control of an underwater unit and actually see sealife swimming around as you move :-)

Not really Grix - its a usual strategy game where you try and destroy your opponents base, but with the added part of controlling units whenever you want to attack or survey the map yourself.

Not gonna go into it all again though lol

Command and Conquer Renegade?

You control the commando, and you blow up the hand of nod.

Real game, third and/or first person shooter.

Ok, in answer to that little problem. Units already react to an attack without your help, so they could do that whilst the player is in a vehicle elsewhere.
Possibly a small miniscreen could pop up in the bottom right of the screen showing the attack on your base accompanied by a vocal warning. If you feel your base can't cope without you then you can simply switch from unit to normal view and go and do what needs to be done (with your recently controlled unit simply being controlled by AI again).

The mini screen would help you by showing how severe an attack is by your enemy, wether your against the comp or another player. Instead of bailing out of vehicles every 5 seconds to run back to your base, you might decide that your defences and units are strong enough in power and numbers to hold off an attack. Afterall, when against another player, they could employ a tactic of sending a couple of weak units to raise your alarm and have you bailing out for no real reason. This mini screen would stop such tactics and give players the freedom to enjoy time in their chosen vehicles.

I think this game is a little too powerful at the moment to be made. Dreamcast and PS2 may be able to handle a game like this, but i think if this was made for a PC it'd have a high crash risk from you constantly being in and out of vehicles all the time. Lets face it - PC's crash when things get busy on normal strategy games (if theres anything that makes me go psycho its spending 4 hours on a level and then being returned to the windows screen !!! ARGH !!!!!!!!!!!), so i very much doubt a PC would run this well.
Overall i'd aim this at consoles :-)

I think you are right Savatt. The only problem with it, if I may say, is that control games are all about control. What happens to all your other units when you've built your fighters, jump in and pilot one and lead a squadron into battle? Do they have to fight it out for themselves whilst you are playing Top Gun? This mix of genre between C&C and Ace Combat and M111 Battle Tank and U-571 Attack Sub would have to be very well programmed to handle all of this if it were to work real-time.
How would you suggest this could be done? Freeze time for your other units and play the FPS parts only in real time until that battle was over, then go back to realtime scenario for the next portion of the game? Difficult to balance realism with control with a good FPS there. Still, keep thinking, you may solve the problem and become a millionaire overnight. You never know, it could be you. :-)
