Bulgaria, not the first destination that people would think of if they were going to go on a skiing holiday but when you look at the prices, things start to look quite impressive.

Only problem is though, you pay for what you get!

It was back in the year of 1998 that I made this memorable tip with my parents and my sister, who then was 8 years old.

After the 3 hour flight to Sofia airport we boarded a coach to take us up to the resort, the hour long coach trip wasn’t made very comfortable due to the fact that the heaters on the coach had broken. Sitting in a cramped coach wearing about fifteen layers of clothing isn’t the most desirable of trips but after we got to the hotel, I thought that it should all be good fun from there onwards.

The hotel was a small place, it only had 6 or 7 rooms and we had the biggest one in the whole place. Still though, it was just about big enough for one double bed and a small fold up bed. I won’t mention that fact that my sister had to sleep in a bed designed for a 3 year old!

Breakfast at the hotel was our next great experience; I was rather hungry after the long trip the day before so I was expecting a nice big breakfast. The sight that I saw though on the breakfast table was very different from what I pictured though. In a little basket were loads of little pieces of bread with some butter slices next to them. They expected us to all survive on this for the week!

After getting into our ski-clothes we made our way up the road to the ski hire shop. We all got our gear fitted and were then divided into groups, as it was our first time skiing we were all put onto a small slope about a hundred meters long and we waited for our instructor to come along and teach us.

We were stuck on this slope for about 15 minutes just standing there trying to keep our balance before an instructor came to meet us. We then spent the whole morning just learning the basic skill of going down the hill without falling over of skiing into anyone else!

What started to happen next though is a worst nightmare for people who are going skiing, instead of it starting to snow, it actually started to rain! For most of the afternoon we were to be stuck out in this weather with the snow melting in the rain! I was hoping that in the evening the temperatures would drop and it would actually start to snow again but nothing happened.

Dinnertime at the hotel wasn’t exactly a feast! We were served a plate; on this plate was a square piece of meat, about 5cm across! We were also very lucky to be given a small boiled potato, a slice of a carrot and a pea!

I went to bed rather hungry!
The next day didn’t start off too good though, the rain from the previous day had frozen to ice and the slopes were rock hard, ice skates would have been better suited to the slopes! We were then led back onto this same slope again to be taught how to turn in our skis. We spent the whole morning doing this on the ice, which wasn’t very easy and by the afternoon, the temperature felt so warm that you could just wear a sweater and T-Shirt and not be cold. The sun was scorching! The snow melted and I spent the rest of the day skiing on slush!

The week carried on though, same things happening. We were fed absolutely tiny portions for breakfast and dinner and the snow had completely melted on most of the slopes leaving us on this small muddy frozen beginner slope the whole week!

When the day came that we were able to go home came, I was absolutely delighted! I could now eat a proper dinner and not have to constantly worry about whether I would starve to death!

We got to the airport and checked in, only to be greeted by a three-hour delay! Believe me, a three-hour delay at Sofia airport is not the best of experiences. There were no shops; no seats and the toilets were closed!

I agreed with someone that I would post before midnight...

I rushed it and was finished before 12, posted at 11:58 according to this SR clock!

http://pennyclick.co.uk/ (At the very bottom!)

After I had posted though, the forums clock was at 12:04!

I feel so bad...

WHAT! I wanted to post this before 12:00!

How many clocks have SR got!?!

The time that appears at the bottom of most pages seems to be 5 minutes slower than this one!

Damm, now I got to wait an extra day to see if I won...

If I win...

A VERY big IF!
