Will the current cost of running broadband make it impossible for most gamers to get online resulting in its failure or will it force a substantial price drop and end up being the best thing to happen to console gaming in years?
Was the failure of Dreamcast and its online functions a sign that online console gaming just dosn't work?

Yes/no.
Although snes was online it only was able to do little things, such as placing bets. The DC is the first "real" online console.
As for who will win i think Nintendo has a big chance.
Sony = I dont think they have ever done something like this before, and they signed with AOL, which a lot of people hate and it is slow, ive got AOL.
MS = money and been in computers for a while.
Nintendo = in japan they made the snes internet ready and were able to place bets on horse races.
Get some friends round and play 4 player, much more fun than faceless apponents that charge by the minute and probably play the games far too much.
