Has anyone ever noticed how common the act of smoking is in the movies nowadays?

Being a smoker myself I have noticed a considerable increase in this trend being portrayed in (mostly American) films.

I was lead to believe that the habit is very much frowned upon in the U.S.A. and to this end you would be forgiven for thinking that you wouldn't see much of it in their creative endeavours, but it seems more popular than ever.

I don't know what really drew my attention to this and I must say that this isn't a new thing, if I think back as early as far as the eighties I can remember countless films with main characters that smoked, but heh, that was the eighties.

I can appreciate the aesthetic value of having a smoker in a film if you are trying to create a gritty kind of atmosphere in the look of the film and I think this has become an overiding factor or maybe the Directors are trying to say something about the respective characters?

For example, films like 'The Man who wasn't there', 'Fight Club'and 'The Usual Suspects' all have that kind of feel to the movie and all of the main characters smoke. There are probably countless others.

So do you all think that smoking is used as an aesthetic tool, or does everyone still smoke in America?
